Honoring Our Veterans
In response to our November Honoring our Veterans contest by DR — proudly hosted in Dancing Elephants Press
DR Rawson - The Possibilist asked the question:
“What would you like to say to all veterans who have served our country? All veterans that have served, all of whom gave some and some gave all.” If you could turn to a Veteran, what would you say?
First I would like to say I am honored to work with Veterans as a nurse within the VA system. My answer to DR Rawson - The Possibilist comes in the words of poetry. My best way for me when I need to communicate highly emotional content.
This is what would I say:
Honoring Our Veterans
What could I say that would even convey,
What words would even come close to telling you,
The way I feel?
Honor and sacrifice what you have done,
For me and others your bravery is more,
Then any of us can ever repay.
You decided from your heart,
To sign up to protect and serve your whole nation.
You did the training,
In extreme difficulties and you have passed.
You are fighting for all of us at home.
You went through hardship that none of us could see,
You left your loved ones safely at home,
Broken hearts cried when you were gone.
Too many precious lives have been lost this way.
My sorrow cannot even begin to say,
No words can repay the sacrifice many of you had to pay.
You have fought for our freedom through difficult times.
Giving your life becomes the ultimate sacrifice.
The words thank you are not enough to express,
The gratefulness I would like to express.
You wrestled through extreme weather
While I was in my cozy home.
You have answered the call and
Protected our home.
All I can say from the bottom of my heart,
I thank you forever and more,
I see what you have done for all of us at home.
I see the care you have in your heart.
I would like to thank you for your sacrifice,
And for everything you have done.
I see your loss,
The nights when you can’t sleep.
I see the loss of your limbs I cannot repay.
I see the pain you had to pay.
I see the anxiety the memory causes,
Too painful to think,
It will take a long time to heal.
All I can say is,
I see your pain.
I see your sacrifice for freedom,
It is a high price you have paid.
Thank you for all of it,
Everything you have done,
Everything you gave up,
For all of us.
You are in my heart.

Honoring our veterans. To all the veterans I know. Honoring my grandfather who had served in the world war and got shot twice and survived. He survived Siberia as well; he was announced dead and then walked home from Siberia to Hungary. Honoring my daughter who is serving now. Honoring all her friends whom I got to know. Honoring all the veterans whom I have met throughout my life and working as a nurse. Honoring all whom I never met.
If I see you now, I will say: “Thank you for all you have done for all of us. My words cannot convey the gratefulness I feel in my heart.”
Thank you, DR Rawson - The Possibilist for the contest idea to honor our veterans.
