Everything You Need to Know About Curation on Medium

Keep the submissions rolling in to TOJ!šŸŠ

Hi everyone! I just want to continue to welcome all the new writers who are finding a home on Medium, and more specifically, in The Orange Journal. We are getting pretty popular, as we just passed 400 followers. Yay! Many of the writers publishing with us are getting curated, too.

This is awesome! And if you haven’t been blessed by the curation Gods yet, do not worry — I promise that your time will come.

What Does it Mean When You are Curated?

When a story becomes curated on Medium, it means that people employed by Medium as curators reviewed your story and decided that it deserves to be distributed to a wider audience.

It could be curated in one or more tags, and it will be shown on users’ homepage and recommended reading if they have indicated an interest in that particular topic. It may appear on the homepage and across various social platforms of Medium.

The best part about getting curated on Medium is that your work gets shown to people who don’t follow you, offering fantastic exposure and a fighting chance to grow your following with people who genuinely love your content and voice.

I recently downloaded a Chrome extension that gives me more details on curation. I will link information on that as soon as I write the post.

Curation has evolved during my time at Medium. It was once easier to get curated, but these days, it doesn’t seem to be that way, at least for me anyway.

Curation Doesn’t Mean Everything, Though

It’s important for you as a new or even seasoned writer to know that some of the top dogs on Medium have been gifted with auto-curation. Yes, it is just as it sounds. Every piece they put out earns automatic curation, regardless of quality or content. Kind of unfair, but life isn’t fair.

Medium has a strict rule that no pieces written about Medium are eligible for curation. I like that rule because then the overall content that lives on the platform would turn to mush. Some writers who have auto-curation like Zulie Rane have told her followers that any pieces written about Medium do get auto-curated like the rest, but later have their curation removed, per the rules. She’s really cool, I like her a lot.

Sometimes, a piece that gets curated will perform worse than a piece that hasn’t. As I said, this is just my experience but has happened enough times to notice. Funny, right? It’s a difficult algorithm to try to figure out, so I don’t try to. It’s always changing anyway, so it seems. I just write and enjoy the curated pieces I do earn. But don’t fuss. It’s exciting, but not the end of the world if you don’t. Trust me.

How Long Does Curation Take?

It can take a human as long as two weeks to review your piece. Sometimes, a piece won’t get curated just because a human reviewer didn’t get to it in time. Other times, your piece just won’t be selected.

An honest thought: I’m not sure about this, but it seems like writers who are enrolled in the MPP are more likely to be curated. This hypothesis is based on some things that I have seen both as an editor and a writer from the new Medium account I started to really get in the shoes of a new Medium writer in 2021. I cannot say that for certain, it’s just a passing thought that needs further research and analysis.

What Does it Take To Be Curated?

There are very specific guidelines for a piece to be considered for curation. After nearly two years on the platform, I developed a thorough formatting guide based on my experiences, from failures to viral posts, and everything in between. Following certain guidelines will help you get into publications, and will also increase your chance at being curated.

Here are Medium’s Guidelines accessible to anyone who takes an interest in reading them.

Probably the most important and common disqualifications from this list are duplicate content.

I have received a number of submissions from new writers that have sent in a piece to TOJ only to tell me they published it in another pub on Medium. This is really not acceptable, and is a sure way to land you in what some mystics deem ā€œcuration jail.ā€ More on that later…

If I were to publish a piece without knowing it has already been published in another place on Medium, this would be considered duplicate content, because — it is!

Medium makes it clear that if you should violate the rules, this will result in fewer chances at distribution for you. So tread lightly, do your homework, and follow the rules.

ā€œViolations of our rules may result in consequences such as account restrictions, limited distribution of your posts, and suspension of your account. Medium has the sole authority and final decision as to whether content or behavior violates our rules.ā€ — Medium policy
