Hiking Barefoot
A poem
I like to hike barefoot and see where my bare feet will take me
watching out for lizards sunning red ants skittering and cactus spines
having no fear trusting that the earth will guide me I just have to follow my feet follow the path
now it gets rocky and I slow down splintered stones gently push against my skin mindfully I move the stones tell a story they have their own beat
the path smooths out but I still hike slow my heartbeat quiets and I am entranced moving like the sun penetrating deep in sensations feeling the vibrations of the earth
I’m on the earth and yet in the earth deep inside to a place unseen a place unknown the spirit of the earth lives within here beckons me down like a portal opening to another world an inner world another dimension of magic
my heart beats as the earth breathes in rhythm we are one
peace envelops me the earth dissolves into me I merge with the earth
the path gets muddy and I walk on through squishy cooling slippery between my toes
from nowhere a dog appears and runs next to me he’s barefoot too together we march in alignment our feet dancing playing with the earth til his owner whistles him back
at the end of my hike my feet are dirty yet strong mud-stained yet not calloused
holding secrets holding the song of the earth a song that wants to be sung a song that wants to be heard
all we have to do is take off our shoes and walk on the earth barefoot
Thank you for reading!
