The Firefly

A story from the indigenous Machiguenga of the Amazon jungle in Peru

the male firefly was flying around looking for a mate

he searched all night high and low but could not find any female partners

until finally he looked up and saw the stars shining

here he found the female fireflies for they were the stars in the sky

Note: This myth was shared to me by my indigenous Machiguenga friends.

The Machiguenga live in the Amazon jungle in Manu, Madre de Dios, Peru.

They live in close connection to nature, the plants and animals. And they hold the sacred knowledge of the healing plants of the jungle.

They were an integral part of my healing of an incurable disease.

As the Amazon burns in Brazil, I share this story with respect and honor for all the indigenous tribes who call the Amazon home.
