Hey There

February Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Statues”

Tell me your secrets, my friend.

As you walk along Главната (the main pedestrian street in Plovdiv), passing crowds of people, boutiques, cafés, and convenience stores, you’ll come across Milyo Ludia (Milyo the Crazy), forever ready to hear whatever you need to unload off your chest.

He never interrupts you. Never talks over you. He simply listens.

What are you going to share?

Some say, if you whisper your wish in Milyo’s ear, it will come true.

This bronze statue commemorates a quirky character who used to roam the streets of Plovdiv or sit on the stairs you see behind the statue.

The stories of who he was are many. Some remember him fondly as the person chatting everyone up, trying to get them to talk to him, share a few jokes or secrets. Others remember the mistreatment of a person who clearly had a mental illness during a time when mental illness wasn’t talked about or even considered a real thing.

Whatever his past, Milyo is now an integral part of Plovdiv, and if you find yourself in the city, stop by and share a secret or two.

I promise, he will listen.

Thank you Vidya Sury, Collecting Smiles for another fun challenge!
