Abstract

Not thinking much of it, I wrote an article based on what I was passionate about, Apple. Here’s How I Made $1,200 My First Month on Medium

I started writing on Medium the last week of February 2021 when I found out about the platform from a YouTube video. I always enjoyed being a viewer to many creators and found YouTube to be my favorite entertainment source, even over Netflix. I always wanted to create a YouTube channel but wasn’t crazy about the idea that you had to be on camera all the time. While watching one of my favorite Youtubers, she had mentioned that she started to transcribe her YouTube videos into Medium articles. I decided to research Medium some more and created an account that same night.

Medium gives users the ability to write stories about anything they want, get published by Publications, and earn money for their articles. What stood out to me was I saw an opportunity for fast growth instead of starting from scratch like a YouTube channel. The option to submit to a publication gives exposure to new writers and this can lead to more people reading your article, which it did for me.

After signing up for an account, I decided I wanted to sign up for the Medium Partner Program. Unlike other creator fund programs, there is no requirement to join. You just submit your bank and tax information and you should be good to go. I got approved within two days and began to write my first story.

Many people wonder, so how much money could I make off writing articles? These are a few of my top-earning stories that earned me $1,200 my first month on medium.

Apple’s IOS 14.5 Update Might Suprise You

The first article I ever wrote on Medium was about Apple’s newest IOS 14.5 update. Not thinking much of it, I wrote an article based on what I was passionate about, Apple. I shared the new features that were rumored to be released, the ones I was excited for, and the ones that many people didn’t know they needed.

I wrote the article in about two hours and that night I had self-published it. Since this was my first article, I was not added as a writer to any Publications yet, which is why I decided to self-publish it. The next morning I had woken up to a private note from a publication saying they love to publish it and it is curated.

The earnings from this article started off very slow but, two weeks after, the earnings shot up as it got a lot more views. The article ended up getting 40,000 views and earned $1,034.20. This is mainly where my earning came from for the month.

Will Online Streaming Sevices Become Cable All Over Again?

An example of an article that did not earn as much was my eighth article where I discussed the newly released online streaming platforms and how consumers are becoming too overwhelmed with which one to pick. The article goes into deep detail about cable tv, cable cutters, the most popular streaming services, and much more.

The article only got around 92 views even though I followed the same format and posted it to the same publication. The article also got curated which means it was up for further distribution to many other people. I was confused and frustrated because I thought it had such potential.

This article proved to me that curation doesn’t always equal a viral article. The stats for this article showcase that I only made $1.80 and it just continued to decline.

How Instagram’s Marketing Strategies Helped Me Grow a Small Business

One of my last articles I wrote this month was about how I used Instagram’s marketing tools to grow an online presence for a small business. I explain how social media lead to a new demographic and shared some tips that I followed to get to that result.

I was particularly excited about this article because it got curated and published into a Publication with over 700,000 followers. I for sure thought this would be another viral hit. To my disappointment, it only got 168 views and earned $3.27. This taught me that more followers don't always mean more views. This should also be a lesson to teach people that just because you don’t get into your dream publication, it doesn't mean you should give up on writing. My first article that went viral was published in a publication with 400 followers.

How Are Medium Earnings Calculated?

Medium earnings are based on views, read time, paying monthly members, and how much time they spend on the article. There is not actually a conversion equation to know how much you will get paid. Writers only receive incentives if the user is a monthly Medium member. A part of their $5 a month goes to your earnings. From the two articles above, it is very apparent that most of the time more views equals a bigger payment.

Now What?

Overall, I am thrilled about my first month of Medium and will continue to keep writing more articles. Currently, I have published 14 articles my first month on Medium. Even though most of the earnings for this month came from my first article, about $200 more dollars came from the other 14 articles.

To anyone looking for advice, or ways to earn a good chunk of money, I would say:

  • Write about what you are passionate about.
  • Submit your article to a publication.
  • Join the Medium Partner Program
  • Choose quality over quantity.
  • A publication with more followers doesn’t always equal more views.
  • Don’t focus on the money, focus on writing.
  • Promote your work on social media.
  • Follow and engage with other writers.
