Here’s A Quick Way To Solve Cooking On Christmas Day

This year I’m cooking.

Yes. You read that right. Me!

Usually, on Christmas Day we’ve been to family, in different parts of the country. This year my parents are coming to us, and I said to my wife that I would do the cooking.

Oh, the joy! The smile!

Let me explain.

Back in March, I decided to try a meal-in-a-box service.

It’s a service that simply provides 99% of the ingredients for a meal, in a box along with a card with the method for preparation.

The main reason I wanted to do this, rather than pick the groceries and ingredients at the supermarket is that, well, I wouldn’t. I wouldn’t go shopping for everything.

Having it delivered is super convenient and they only send what you actually need. There has been zero wastage of food.

There are two that I’m aware of in the UK, HelloFresh and Gousto and they’re both very similar, although Gousto does offer more plant-based menus, so there’s a little more choice. They have more fish options too.

We have two meals a week, for four people, and the cost is approx £32 per week. That’s £4 per person. I think that’s quite good value.

More importantly, I enjoy doing the cooking.

From never having done anything like this before, apart from pasta or putting a pizza in the oven, I have never cooked by preparing the vegetables, adding sauces, and creating the dish on the front of the menu card!

Jump forward to the end of this year, and I suggested we do the same thing for Christmas Day. I will make the main course.

We chose Gousto because their choice was better, and whilst it may not be the traditional offering, it’s going to be a lot of fun. Especially cooking for my mum and dad. My mum is a terrific cook. Really great.

No pressure then!

What are we having? I hear you ask.

Crowd Sauced Veggie Christmas Sarnie

The most wasted ingredient is the humble sprout. To zhuzh up your Brussels, you’ll stuff brioche baps with crispy honey-sage fried sprouts and gravy-soaked meat-free chicken. Dip in gravy mayo and dive in!

Is your mouth watering yet?

I’ll do some potato wedges on the side and starters and desserts will be sorted out separately.

It’s going to be a lot of fun.

Try it yourself
