Her Son Saw Her in the Shower, and The Sky Was Falling Down
My thoughts on nudity after seeing the reactions to a viral post on Quora

Editor’s note: This post might include sensitive content for some readers. If you are offended by nudity, this post might not suit you.
While perusing through the feedback on viral posts across social media platforms, one particular thread on Quora caught my eye. It detailed the concerns of a woman whose son inadvertently caught a glimpse of her in the shower, prompting her to seek advice from the online community.
The post raised several concerns for me due to its lack of context. Firstly, it puzzled me why the woman chose to bring a private family matter into the public domain. Secondly, the absence of details regarding the age of the woman and the child further complicated the situation. Thirdly, it led me to question why being seen naked was perceived as such a significant issue.
I respect individuals with varying views on nudity, whether they embrace it or prefer modesty. Personally, nudity has never been a concern for me.
My children and even grandchildren have seen me naked numerous times, and it has always been a natural aspect of our family life, devoid of any discomfort, offense, judgment, or issues.
During my earlier scientific endeavors in Germany, Switzerland, France, Spain, Italy, and Greece, I encountered countless individuals who were naked in streets, parks, and nude beaches. Importantly, there was no inherent sexual connotation attached to their nudity in those contexts.
As a health professional, I understood its necessity during my scientific research, staying within ethical conduct guidelines.
I also saw my parents and grandparents naked. My father and I used to go to health centers in Australia, and all members used to shower naked in an open area, and some even swam naked. I have never encountered any problem.
During my youth in the 1960s, I became involved with naturist groups that promoted an environment of peaceful coexistence and acceptance, embracing nudity as a natural aspect of human existence.
Within these communities, there was a notable absence of violence or judgment; instead, a sense of harmony and even reverence for our biological forms prevailed.
While certain countries and cultures perceive nudity as taboo, it’s essential to consider the broader perspective: we are all born naked, devoid of clothing imposed by societal norms.
The concept of clothing is a human invention, later institutionalized and regulated by laws that penalize those who defy established norms despite the inherent natural state of our being.
In reflecting on the complexities surrounding nudity prompted by a viral Quora post, it becomes evident that perceptions of nakedness vary widely across cultures and individuals.
The public sharing of personal experiences, such as the incident described, raises questions about privacy and societal norms. Yet, amidst this diversity of perspectives lies a fundamental truth: nudity is an inherent aspect of human existence, neither inherently shameful nor inherently liberating.
Rather, it is the societal constructs and cultural beliefs that shape our perceptions. Recognizing and respecting this diversity can promote a more inclusive dialogue that embraces differences while promoting understanding and acceptance.
Ultimately, our attitudes towards nudity reflect broader notions of identity, freedom, and societal values, inviting us to explore these complexities with empathy and open-mindedness.
As we navigate this nuanced terrain, let us strive to cultivate environments of mutual respect and dignity where people are empowered to confidently embrace their bodies and celebrate the diversity of human experience.
