Healing Without Fighting: Listen and Embrace Body’s Wisdom
Discover the power and gentle path to healing
Our human body is the most sophisticated and intelligent system. Borrow the quote from Da Vinci on nature: “She has her own logic, her own laws.”
This realization came to me after reconnecting with TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), where the ancient wisdom truly blew me away.
As time goes on, I have gotten better at listening to my body’s voice. It has helped me to build confidence for self-care along the way i.e. leveraging ancient exercise to recover pain from a skiing fall, or using herbs from the backyard to heal mouth ulcers.
My personal experience has enlightened me that ailments are often signals that serve as a reminder or warning for us to connect with our inner voice. While they may be unpleasant and uncomfortable, it’s also an opportunity to reflect and learn how to better take care of ourselves. They are the problem and more importantly, could be the clue to the underlying cause and solution.
By paying attention to the body’s signals, we may be able to unlock its secret message and find a gentle path to healing.
Let me share more.
Reverse cold at its budding stage: body’s natural medicine
I have to begin by highlighting the body’s natural medicine: the Meridian (also called Channel) system.
In recent posts, I shared one stunning experience that made me a firm believer in this system, and how I applied acupressure to 孔最 LU 6 along Lung Meridian to reverse my cold symptom quickly.
With my constant preaching, my husband also learned a thing or two along the way.
He had his own aha moment. It happened while he was on a business trip.
One night, he woke up at midnight with a sore throat and found no medicine on hand. He remembered the Lung Meridian and found a sensitive point, 天府 LU3, on the upper arm. He massaged it for a couple of minutes. To his delight, a few hours later in the morning, the discomfort was gone.
Be aware of the body’s voice. The sooner you can connect, the better for healing.
Reddish patch on my neck: is it a bad thing?
I once had a vacuum cleaner, an early model with a bagless design. One time when I tried to empty the trash, somehow it was stuck inside the cup. When I tried to unstick it, the trash spilled out and a cloud of dust just scattered in front of my face.
Oops, not good, the thought flashed through my mind.
Not long after this, I noticed a reddish patch showing up on my neck, looking kind of awful. No other discomfort though. I stayed calm, figuring it was the body’s reaction to detox.
I waited patiently. After a few more days, it disappeared by itself.
Since the incident, I learned to be more cautious and wear appropriate protection when doing certain household chores.
It would have been a struggle had I sought medical intervention without realizing the likely link to the vacuum incident. After all, the cause could be a mystery and diagnosis a challenge for the doctor. Maybe I ended up taking pills to suppress the alarming sign or even having to go through some tests, while in fact, the body was working its way to dispel the toxin. Any additional treatment could disturb the natural healing and complicate the process.
Sometimes a “bad” sign may be just part of the healing. Don’t panic. Listen attentively. You will get better at knowing when to act and when to let go.
Cluster headache: what happened
This happened to my husband.
He was once hit with a horrible cluster headache. It lasted a couple of weeks. Taking painkillers did help reduce the symptom, but relying on pills is not a wise solution. Without knowing the underlying cause, it’s a concern, to say the least.
It came all of a sudden. We couldn’t think of anything unusual. Very puzzling.
In search of an answer, Husband did some serious scrutinizing, then a sudden realization: could this be related to 荠菜 (Shepherd’s purse) we ate recently? We newly spotted buns stuffed with this vegetable in the frozen section at an Asian market.
To test out this hypothesis, we ate the vegetable bun again. Whoa, he got the same horrible headache.
He must be allergic to this vegetable, something quite unusual. We were just relieved that the trigger was found.
When faced with an ailment, take a breath and listen to the body. Even if you ultimately need to seek medical attention, the information and clue would still be valuable for improving the diagnosis and treatment.
To me, the most fascinating and intelligent thing is just in front of our eyes, the human body. Listen attentively and have a dialogue, we may be able to let it guide us gently to better health and well-being.
