Harvey’s Guide To A Happy Life

One solid Staffie can show you the ropes

One of the best things about dogs is that they help keep us ‘down-to-earth’ and at the same time, they show us how to lighten up, have fun and relax, and not take life or ourselves too seriously.

So here is a look at what my Staffie dog, Harvey, had to say about a life well-lived, (in his own words of course)

  • I live in the present — usually with the wrapper ripped off and a rope toy being throttled, but you can’t say I don’t have fun. Guess that’s why I’m a hot ticket.
  • When I’m in the big green park, I’m a social boy, so I run to meet all the other dogs and people. I love smart, scruffy, and all sizes, colours, shapes, and ages. They can love me, hate me, or ignore me — I don’t mind. I enjoy myself no matter what, and there’s always a game to be had. If I lose my ball, I chew a stick or chase a squirrel. There are loads of ways I can have fun, it’s just a case of sniffing them out. That’s why I’m known as ‘Smiler’ and I’m ‘well jaunty’.

  • People feel they can talk to me about anything — even strangers, and I don’t charge for it — (No offence, therapists). I think it’s because I accept humans as they are; having an awful lot of stuff to get off their chests, and they understand I’m a good listener and always on high alert for a crisp packet.
  • ‘Live on the sunny side of the street’ is my motto. I know I don’t exactly have to earn a crust, but if you keep doing things that make you smile — really wide, it doesn’t half keep you in league with Tony Robbins.
  • I’m not ashamed or afraid to show my feelings to anyone — (Sorry if you find that embarrassing, but I don’t have hidden depths).
  • I don’t judge, complain, hold grudges or worry about annoying things that people or cats did yesterday, and I don’t focus on mistakes, I just think, ‘What fun is up next?’ Sometimes I get a good long back rub when I pin my owner down on the sofa, and it isn’t difficult with my stocky body and full-on face wash skills.

  • When I love someone, it doesn’t end, no matter what they do, and I’m the most affectionate boy that’s built like a tank.
  • I always have my dinner on time and clean round the bowl afterwards. That way, it gives my day some structure and ensures there is time left for important fun things, like having a massive cuddle, chomping on toys (and other things), playing games, and going out.
  • I love folk guitar music, it’s so relaxing. I lay on the couch and stretch out fully while my owner provides the entertainment.
  • I’m an expert at adapting to life and new situations. If you give me a bed to lie on and I don’t like it, I’ll rough it up, sleep underneath it or look for something else. But whatever happens, I won't let it get me down.
  • Lastly, if you have treats, a set of wheels, a rubber ball, and you are totally besotted with my chunky magnificence — Who can blame you? See you in the park!
