Happy National Puppy Day

Lesson 69: Make sure they honor you on your special day!

Keke shortly after her adoption (photo by author)

March 23, 2024, is National Puppy Day, and it’s a wild coincidence. Because today, I happen to be a puppy. My name is Keke, and I’m an eleven-month-old Biewer Terrier. I have been writing Keke’s Guide to Training Your Human since I was three months old, and let me tell you, I’ve lived through a lot of changes! Let me tell you about some of them.

The biggest change occurred on April 20, 2023. The main thing I remember was that before I was born, it was dark, slobbery, and crowded. After I was born, it was still dark, slobbery, and crowded, but it was also colder, and I had to learn to fend for my meals or go hungry. (Before, there had been an all-you-can-eat salad bar that never closed. HOW DID SHE DO IT?)

I was born with two brothers and a sister. Momma tried to maintain her on-time service rating, but sometimes the other diners got a little pushy, and occasionally the kitchen lagged behind on order fulfillment.

The next big event happened on the last day of June when I adopted my new humans and then promptly took over their house. I had it spruced up and smelling like a proper kennel in no time, then received my diploma at house training graduation:

There was lots more to teach my humans, who were new to this puppy parenting business, like how to make them keep their paws off my blog, the secrets of a stress-free road trip (hint: it’s more fun for everyone if someone rides in the back with Keke), and how to lead happier, longer lives (hint: eat like a dog).

So, happy National Puppy Day. I hope you have a puppy to play with today. Somewhere, she’s waiting for you.
