Hamas Launches Surprise Attack On Israel
Israel has now just had a surprise attack from Hamas militants. Hamas has announced that they would seek to attack Israel, but Israeli forces would not predict when they would actually attack. Tensions rise in the Gaza Strip as Israel faces one of its most deadly terrorist attacks yet.
Right now, Israel is in a state of war. According to CNN, this is one of the worst conflicts in Israel in at least 75 years. The terrorist organization Hamas has incurred what may be one of the absolutely most tragic terrorist attacks that we have seen in the past years. It is, of course, a tragedy, as terrorists launched about 2,000 missiles from Gaza into Israel. The attack was launched when armed men — militants possibly from Hamas — snuck under beams near the border. They were dressed in all black and had snuck past watch towers.
These militants have been using weaponized drones in order to complete their attack on the military base that they were raiding. The invading Hamas militants used a drone to drop a bomb on two Israeli soldiers. The Hamas militants seemed to be moving toward the north in order to make raids on other Israeli sites and infrastructure. The base near the Israeli-Gaza border has been looted and set on fire. Two female Israeli soldiers are now being kept in captivity.
The Hamas militants continue their raid. According to AP News, Hamas forces have attacked over 22 locations outside of the Gaza strip, and Hamas militants have attacked at least 15 miles from the Gaza strip border. The attack was specifically launched on the Jewish holiday, and Hamas specifically wants to get Israel off guard. Currently, Israel is having difficulty countering this offensive. But they have made airstrikes into specific areas of the Gaza Strip, so Israel has made it clear that they are aggressive. Israel made warnings before the airstrikes, and they only wanted to destroy specific Hamas infrastructure.
Hamas terrorists have now run into towns and populated areas in Israel and have shot and wounded Israeli citizens. According to AP News, 250 Israelis were killed and 1,700 were wounded. This would make the terrorist attack one of the worst terrorist attacks in Israel in the past decades. Social media videos have arrived of Israeli forces and Hamas fighters fighting. There are also clear videos of Hamas or other military forces launching rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israel. Hamas is probably attacking due to the restrictions and blockades that were imposed by Israel. What Hamas really wants is to take control of major religious sites in Israel and take back Eastern Jerusalem.
In 1967, Israel was able to fight Jordan in the six-day war and take East and West Jerusalem from Jordan. The six-day war marks an incredible achievement by Israel, but it was always known that the Muslims wanted Jerusalem back. Jerusalem is the holy place for Muslims because it is the last place that their prophet Mohammed came to when he ascended into heaven.
Other sites, such as the al-Aqsa compound, are very important holy sites for Muslims as well. Al-Aqsa is an important site for both Judaism and Islamic tradition. The sacred ground is known as al Haram Al Sharif to Muslims, and it has been known to Jews as Temple Mount. This place has been an area of conflict, and Israel often sends forces to this holy site in order to control the conflicts that occur here. Only Muslims are allowed to pray in the compound, and that is the status quo that was arranged centuries ago.
Muslims fear that they will be pushed away from this holy ground by the far-right government in Israel. Israel is progressively getting more far-right and intends to keep its religious values on hold. The growing far-right Jewish movement in Israel continues to take a grip, and Muslims fear that they will lose control in the Gaza Strip and in Israel.
Benjamin Netanyahu has promised to retaliate against the clearly violent Hamas militants. Israeli airstrikes have flattened multiple apartment-story buildings that have held Hamas-led offices. Israel has recently destroyed a 14-story apartment building with the use of an airstrike. Hamas has fired rockets into major Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv. Throughout the day, 3,500 rockets have been fired from the Gaza strip, and the rocket fire will continue throughout the day.
Israel is doing whatever it can to stop the fight. But Israeli forces have had a hard time controlling what comes out of the Gaza Strip. Israel has what is known as the iron dome system and can precisely stop what missile strikes that come into Israel. Israel has one of the most advanced militaries on the planet, but if Hamas keeps launching surprise attacks on Israeli cities, then they will still have a problem keeping up with the continuing attacks.
