Summary

The web content discusses the author's resilience and determination, drawing inspiration from a spider's persistence in rebuilding its web, and reflects on the personal growth and risks taken to achieve one's goals, such as moving to the Netherlands for further education.

Abstract

The article titled "Haiku — 005: Grit" is a reflective piece that uses the metaphor of a spider's relentless efforts to rebuild its web after a monsoon to illustrate the author's own perseverance in life. The author shares a personal narrative of being a small-town boy striving to make a mark in the world, emphasizing the importance of not giving up despite setbacks. The haiku itself speaks of the spider's undeterred nature, and the accompanying text expands on the theme of grit, comparing the act of rebuilding the web to the author's decision to pursue a master's degree in the Netherlands, a significant risk that paid off. The article encourages readers to persist, learn, and focus in order to reach meaningful destinations in life. It also references a previous haiku on doubt, suggesting a thematic continuity of overcoming personal challenges.

Opinions

  • The author equates giving up with becoming an "NPC in my own life," implying that not pursuing one's ambitions leads to a passive existence.
  • The spider's behavior is seen as an example of single-minded determination that the author has learned from and applied to their own life.
  • The author believes in the value of taking risks, as evidenced by the decision to move to the Netherlands, which is presented as a pivotal moment in their journey.
  • There is an opinion that continuous learning and improvement are key components of achieving success and finding purpose.
  • The author seems to suggest that pushing through uncertainty, as highlighted in the previous haiku on doubt, is crucial to personal development.

Haiku — 005: Grit

The not-so-subtle art of never giving up.

The spider dauntless,

Countless webs swept in monsoon wind,

Rising to rebuild.

I am one of the many tales, of a boy from a small town trying to make his place in the wide world. Just as any of the other stories, some attempts do not end well, some, better than others. But, as a spider is, single-minded in the act of making its house a reality, I learned to not be deterred by things not working my way.

Thinking back, if I had settled for anything lesser than what I am, and what I want to be, I would probably be an NPC in my own life (gamers, anyone?), like that time I chose to take a huge risk by relocating to Netherlands to do my MSc.

Keep at it, learn and improve, focus, and we all get somewhere meaningful.
