Groundbreaking discovery in Egypt. Possibly the oldest mummy in the country has been discovered

Archaeologists say they have found the oldest mummy in Egypt right next to the pyramid of Djeser in Sakkara. It is more than 4,300 years old and belonged to an important and influential man from the Fifth Dynasty.

Egypt.is the cradle of one of the greatest civilizations in human history, the ancient land of the pharaohs and the place where the world’s first pyramid was built. Over the past 150 years, tombs and sarcophagi of the legendary rulers who ruled the Nile have been found here. With these discoveries, archaeologists have been able to learn much more about what this remarkable country looked like several thousand years ago.

It doesn’t stop there. News of new finds, but also of groundbreaking research, continues to come in from Egypt. Such as about the mummy of the golden boy, which has been digitally opened. Scientists, after years, finally discovered what secrets this majestic sarcophagus hid.

It turned out that inside it were as many as 49 precious amulets, and thanks to an examination using CT scans, researchers discovered that the boy had a golden tongue. This is because Egyptians believed that this was believed to provide the dead with the ability to communicate after death.

Over the past few months, Egyptian archaeologists have been conducting new excavations in Sakkara, just a few hundred meters from the pyramid of Jeser, at a site called Gisr el-Mudir. Also known as the Great Homestead, it is one of the oldest stone structures in Egypt. Until now, scholars were unsure what function the structure served.

This is the oldest mummy in Egyptian history

The team, which consisted of 10 archaeologists, discovered that 20 meters underground there was a huge stone coffin. The stone alone, which sealed the tomb from above, weighed about 5 tons. Once the researchers managed to get inside, they found that inside the crypt rested a complete, well-preserved and gold-covered mummy.

Analysis showed that the mummification process took place more than 4,300 years ago, i.e. during the Old Kingdom period. Researchers are convinced that this is probably the oldest mummy found in Egypt.

“This is the oldest and most beautiful mummy we have ever found. It was covered with layers of gold, had a headband on his head and precious jewelry on his chest. The sarcophagus’ furnishings lead us to believe that this was an extremely wealthy man,” according to Zahi Hawass, former Minister of Culture and Antiquities of Egypt and one of the world’s leading Egyptologists.

Researchers say the man died at the age of 35 and was named Djed Sepsh. For now, however, it is not known exactly who the man was.

Many unusual artifacts have been discovered in the underground, including a blind gate

There were also two other tombs in the Gisr el-Mudir underground. One of them is dated to the reign of King Unas from the Fifth Dynasty. According to various historians, it fell between 2504–2347 BC, 2500–2350 BC or 2465–2323 BC. The dynasty was ruled at the time by kings Neferefre, Userkaf and Shepseskare, among others. Most of them were buried in the pyramid at Abusir. Archaeologists relayed that the second tomb resembled one belonging to a wealthy man. It too will soon be opened.

In one of the shafts that led to the tomb, archaeologists discovered three statues that depicted the same person. In turn, nine other statues depicting servants were found near the so-called “blind gate”. Researchers say this is a groundbreaking discovery, as it sheds new light on the art of the Old Kingdom.

The blind gates were stone slabs that were part of the design of the tombs. They represented a false closed door. It was a symbol of the entrance to the world of the dead and the ties connecting the living and the dead. One copy of the blind gates is in the Louvre Museum in Paris, and another is in the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw. They were part of the tomb of the mastaba of Pharaonic dignitary Izi from the 6th Dynasty.
