One of the best and simplest things you can do to improve your life is include gratitude as a daily practice.
The law of expansion says that what you focus on grows. We all have things to be thankful for. Focusing on the good and positive things in life will help you see more of them.
In The Neuroscience of Gratitude and Effects on the Brain, Chowdhury cites that using a gratitude journal leads to less stress, better quality sleep, and more emotional awareness.
Chowdhurty also mentions that gratitude practiced daily increases dopamine and serotonin, acting as a ‘natural anti-depressant.’ It also builds more empathy, contentment, and happiness.
In the YouVersion Bible Plan, Choosing Gratitude, Amy Seiffert says,
“What if today, just today, we whispered ‘Thank You’ for each thing we take for granted? Whispering “thank you for these” as we tie each shoe. Breathing “thank you for coffee” as we take a sip. Murmuring, “thank you for water” as I shower with clean, warm water running down my face. And maybe we will look a little bit crazy, but wouldn’t we rather be crazy and grateful than sane and entitled?”
In the YouVersion Bible plan The Transforming Power of a Grateful Heart, Roxanne Parks shares,
“During that particularly difficult season, I read the book 1000 Gifts by Anne Voskamp. …inspired by Anne’s story, I started journaling everything that I could possibly be grateful for. I asked God to open my eyes to even the smallest gift… like a knuckle to help wrap my finger around my coffee cup, like heating and air conditioning, like toilet paper, like fresh air. …As I continue to diligently open my eyes and my heart to all the gifts in my life, I began to recognize them everywhere. It was like there was a whole new world to appreciate that I hadn’t taken the time to see or made the choice to notice.”
She continues,
“I flew through 1,000 gifts within months and decided that this was a new way of life. A grateful heart had transformed my days. Even more exciting, my grateful heart began to permeate my home and my family. So many things began to change when I changed my heart. …I found that there is transforming power in a grateful heart.”
Your assignment: Find three things every day to be grateful for. Do you have somewhere to lay your head at night? Food in your belly? A toothbrush? A beautiful sky above? Most of us have all of have these and many more.
Start taking notice and time every day to reflect on what you are thankful for. It will greatly improve the quality of your life. All you have to do is look around with open eyes and an open heart and say, “thank you.”
