Gourmet Improvisation
Like mother, like daughter in the kitchen

Mom spun pure gold out of limp carrots and puckered peppers that shielded us from the reality of tight budgets, hard days and the sacrifices she made to help us thrive
In her improvisational way, she served up adventures with flavours that took us on the worldly trips she wished she could offer She never had to though Her delicacies were plenty
Everyone knew her for the art she stirred up and her ability to create a feast on the spot She served myriad cuisines with her own special touches and how it brought everyone joy
Now I channel her when I pull dinner out of my hat and serve it excitedly to people I adore Just as she did, I gladly anticipate the smile of satisfaction as my love fills hungry bellies
Thank you Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她) for your prompt: what is your cooking origin story?
I was lucky to have two parents who were gifted in the kitchen. My mom was especially influential, as she was the one who raised my siblings and me as a single parent for most of our childhoods. I enjoyed spending evenings in the kitchen with her, watching her make scrumptious meals, seldom consulting recipes. I picked up her cooking style and I’m grateful to carry her with me in that way.
