Summary

Google has rebranded its Business Intelligence solution Data Studio to Looker Studio, unifying it with its other BI tool Looker, while maintaining a free version alongside a new paid Pro tier.

Abstract

Google has consolidated its Business Intelligence offerings by merging Google Data Studio with Looker, resulting in the rebranding of Data Studio to Looker Studio. This change is reflected in the name and logo update, but the core functionality remains the same for now. The move addresses the previous redundancy of having two separate BI solutions managed by different teams. Despite the rebranding, Google continues to offer a free version of Looker Studio, which has been a significant advantage over competitors like Qlik. Additionally, Google has introduced Looker Studio Pro, a paid version that includes enterprise management features, team collaboration capabilities, and service-level agreements (SLAs). The decision to unify these tools is seen as a strategic step by Google, with the potential for more updates in the future.

It had kind of announced itself, Google is combining its two Business Intelligence solutions into one solution [1].

I like to see what’s new in Data Studio updates, I’ve noticed for some time that these decreased in recent weeks. Many of us have wondered why Google has two solutions in the area of (self service) business intelligence. Why two solutions with two teams and different goals, if you can not unite them in each other — and this is exactly what Google has now done.

You can see the changes in Data Studio but for now only in the name and the logo, everything else is still as before.

Also the most important question from many of you: Does it cost anything now? No, for the time being Google does not charge for Looker Studio, which has always been a major advantage of the solution compared to e.g. Qlik and co.

But Google also offers a paid version with Looker Studio Pro. This should then basically contain what Looker has already stated in advance, Google said that the Pro version will get new enterprise management features, team collaboration capabilities, and SLAs.

All in all, this is probably a logical step by Google, and possibly more updates will come. You can stay curious and the most important thing is that there is still a free version.
