Going Viral is Annoying Me

Skewed stats are not worth a buck and a half

Wow, surprise. I went viral. This one article keeps going like the Energizer Bunny. Am I doing a victory lap here? Hardly, 96% of the views are external so no income is getting generated and, since these are not Medium subscribers, they are not becoming my regular readers (do I have any of those?).

I had scoffed previously at becoming a Medium shill through the referral program but considering the number of views was still on the rise I went ahead and edited the story to add the link. I’ll update this story if I use the proceeds to buy a house.

Here I am for the past month looking at my views and reads doubling and tripling but my income down by half. I wrote about this here.

Those were murky waters then but what surfaced overtime was looking at the views and reads columns and guestimating it in my head. Month over a month is a bit better as I would expect from plenty of writing and not producing or promoting clickbait.

Admittedly, it’s been fun to have an article viewed over a thousand times but it is a little deflating that it was a piece written off the cuff.

The piece was inspired by something Louis Petrik wrote and I commented on. My comment was expanded into the story which is pretty derivative (as a lot of jokes are). The part I am most proud of though is using an animated GIF of an animated GIF running on the laptop that is the subject of the article. Maybe I will write a sequel but only if I can get Chuck Norris to hold a MacBook Pro with my story displayed on it (no PhotoShop allowed).

The moral of the story is, be careful what you wish for you may get a devil’s bargain as I did.
