God Needs Blessings Too

A Short Story about the Bond of an Incomparable Love

“When two hearts are connected, blessings work both ways.”

There was a small village, and the people of that village were devotees of Indra, whom they called Rain God. They worshiped him every day. Lord Indra was happy with their devotion and blessed the place with sufficient rainfall every year for the growth of the crops.

However, after a few years, the villagers got busy in their lives and neglected him. Lord Indra got hurt from being forgotten. He waited for another year, but no one turned up. Eventually, he gave up on the villagers too.

The following year the village saw less produce from agriculture because there had been no rain in the whole area. With no money and little food to eat, the people went to their leader and asked for help.

The head of the village was an old man. After listening to the grievances of the people, he asked everyone to gather at the temple after sunset.

Everyone reached the temple later that evening and gathered in the prayer hall where the old man was waiting for them.

The head of the village said, “We are going through a terrible crisis. The ferocious drought has gripped our village. I suggest performing a collective prayer for the prosperity of the village. We should seek lord Indra’s blessings as he had always blessed us in the past. I trust he will help us this time too.”

They prayed together, and when the prayer was complete, lord Indra appeared before them.

Everyone bowed in respect.

Lord Indra blessed them with prosperity.

When Lord Indra was about to disappear, the head of the village said, “God, we are ordinary human beings who often make mistakes, and you always forgive us for those mistakes. It is true that we got busy in our lives and forgot you, but how could you, despite being God, forget us?”

Lord Indra smiled and said, “Everyone in this village had been worshiping me for decades, and over the period of time, a bond of incomparable love formed between us. This bond connects our hearts together. The way you feel connected to me, the same way, I also feel connected to you all. The bond grew stronger over time, and so you received more blessings from me.”

Lord Indra continued, “You forgot one thing when hearts are pure and connected, blessings work both ways. You have only seen the blessings I bestowed upon you, but you never thought of the blessings I received through your prayers. When you stopped worshiping me, I also stopped receiving those blessings. My heart was in pain. When the heart feels pain, it seeks happiness and follows the path where it sees the same. In reaction, my heart unconsciously chose to forget you. It got busy receiving blessings from other souls. Because our hearts were connected, you saw the sadness of my heart in the form of drought. When hearts are connected, it doesn’t matter whether you are God and or an ordinary man. Blessings are nothing but the happiness that one’s heart feels. One should always respect the heart that brings happiness into one’s life. It is the greatest blessing.”

The village head and the others had understood the bond of incomparable love.
