Go Find Yourself In Nature

Inspired by A Taste For Life publication — Prompt 1: A Nature Photo Story

The August prompt for the publication A Taste For Life is ‘nature’.

Of course, a prompt like this can lead in many directions, and I feel overwhelmed with the options of what I could write about.

I am blessed to have had nature as a large part of my life since I was just a tiny baby. My childhood consisted of our family heading out each weekend in the summer months to go camping. I feel like I grew up around the campfire, chasing frogs, inspecting ants, and just getting dirty.

In the winter I was also out in nature skiing, skating, and playing in the snow. Back then we didn’t have the distractions to keep us indoors as kids do now, and on weekends, it wouldn’t be long before my mom would yell at me to “get outside!”

That is, of course, if it wasn’t minus 40C like it is wont to do in Canada.

I must say that I feel so grateful for my connection to the earth. I realized very early on that I am a part of the life systems that beat their steady heartbeat across the land, and I don’t take nature for granted, one iota.

We are staying in the city of Istanbul, Turkey right now. It houses over 15 million people and I can’t help but wonder what it is like to grow up in a place like this. As we were walking the concrete maze of streets and houses that surround us the other day, we saw numerous groups of kids that were playing in the streets. Such a different childhood than the one that I had.

Of course, Istanbul does parks very well, and I wrote about it in my post Three Big Things That We Love About Istanbul, but it’s not the same as being in nature.

Being in nature, to me, is being surrounded by trees, plants animals, bugs, and vastness. There should be no concrete in sight and few roads. But I also realize that in writing that trees are a requirement, we have also been in beautiful nature landscapes without even one tree.

But it’s not my preference.

Over the course of our travels, we have come across some stunning natural landscapes. I want to use this post as a way to share some of those photos. Maybe it will encourage others to get out of the cities and head out into the vastness of the wilderness.
