Gizem “Luie” Harmankaya: A Female Gaming Legend We Lost
A tribute to a Pro-Valorant game player from Türkiye

As a passionate gamer, when I installed the new update on the Valorant video game recently, the game opened with a new player card.
Usually, player cards have to be unlocked as you play more, then you can equip them in your collection, but this one was right there, ready to be unlocked and equipped.
As I unlocked, equipped, and inspected it, I saw that the card was in the name of Gizem “Luie” Harmankaya as a tribute to her. I’ve heard of her as I’m interested in Valorant Esports, but I didn’t know what happened to her.
My heart was utterly broken when I learned about her passing away during the Turkish Earthquake in February 2023. She was a resident of Kahramanmaraş, which was one of the areas that got hit by the earthquake hardest.
The magnitude of this devastating earthquake was 7.8, and what’s more devastating is that Gizem was trapped under the rubble for over 40 hours. Mislina Harmankaya, a family member of Luie, initially tweeted for help, saying that the pro player seemed to still be alive and able to dial the phone.
Several Turkish esports organizations retweeted the call for rescue, with Gizem trapped for more than 40 hours. Her family was waiting, and they say people were begging for a rescue team to save her.

Calls for help had spread so far that “Turgutlu Bld Esports” requested in a separate tweet to “avoid making the process more difficult by spreading news of unknown origin.”
After 40+ hours of uncertainty, Gizem “Luie” was unfortunately confirmed to have passed away under the rubble, and we lost a legendary gamer and a kind soul.
Tweets and replies started pouring in, expressing sadness over the loss of Gizem “Luie” and condolences for her family and friends.
“Rest in peace Gizem💜 Losing women within the scene really do hit hard. Your achievements will not be forgotten,” says one tweet from a Valorant player called Emlux.
Losing Gizem “Luie” is soul-crushing as Gizem meant a lot to many people.
Not only was she a daughter, sister, and friend, but she was also a champion for women-empowerment in the video gaming world. She was a powerful, kind voice with great talent.
The player card Valorant made as a tribute to Luie made Gizem the first Valorant professional player to have their name added to the game. This underscores Gizem’s lasting legacy and irreplaceable mark on the professional gaming world.
I hope to spread the word about Gizem Luie and raise awareness around not only unforeseen and devastating natural disasters but also powerful women’s voices in the video gaming world.
Here’s a video to remember her:
