Getting into a Flow and 9 other Quips

My September Q&A with The Brain Is A Noodle

Photo by Mor Shani on Unsplash

[1] What do you love most about the experience of writing?

I really love getting into a flow. Being in a flow state while writing is one of the best feelings. I don’t know exactly where the words will take me, but they are leading me to a destination and I’m happy to go along for the ride.

[2] What’s your favourite candy?

My favorite candy… I guess dark chocolate. I love dark chocolate in almost every candied form — covering nuts, nougat, caramel, or good-old chocolate-covered chocolate. I don’t like raisins, as mentioned before, but that's about it. Otherwise, I’m a big fan. Please send chocolates!

[3] What’s the story behind one of your scars?

I have two matching scars right below my knees. As a kid, I loved playing with the boys. I wasn’t a tomboy per se, but I liked showing that I could hang. One day at church summer camp, the girls were playing something boring and calm in the grass and the boys were playing football (American football) in the parking lot. I chose to play with the boys. They wouldn’t toss the ball to me often, but one time they did and I really went for it. I ran back and then further back. My fingers grazed the ball in what would have been the most epic one-handed catch. But I had not noticed the edge of the curb. I tripped fell and scraped my knee. And… this happened twice.

[4] What is something you can never seem to finish?

I never seem to finish Indian food… It’s not because I can’t but because I love it so much that I always keep some to finish the next day. I will finish it, but just never on the first day.

There are also some books I can’t ever seem to finish. “Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed” by Jared Diamond is was a gift from a friend and I really can’t seem to finish it. I’ve made my peace with this. Some books just aren’t for me.

[5] What would you do on a free afternoon in the middle of the week?

Oh man… I love having a free afternoon especially mid-week, but even a weekend afternoon is rare for me. I like taking naps or running errands to get a handle on things early while I have the time.

Faves?

  • Favourite item in your bathroom? The drain overflow cover. I like taking baths and it was a waste of water to keep filling it up while the water drains out slowly. This thing is handy.
  • Favourite kind of pen? I don’t pick favorites with pens because I’m prone to losing them. Right now, though, my journaling pen is a PaperMate InkJoy 700 RT. I had an undergrad mentee who introduced me to the Matador Orbits. Those are pretty reliable pens and come in aesthetically pleasing colors.
  • Favourite sound? Maybe the first hello on a phone call? Or laughter? This is a hard question.
  • Favourite furniture store? Ikea. I have never bought furniture there, but I do like walking around.
  • Favourite plant? Succulents. I’m a bad plant parent, but I can keep succulents alive.

Articles to share

  • Your top piece last month (Thank you all for reading this piece! It was a tough one to finish as I discussed in last month’s interview.)
  • A piece that deserves more love (by Nada Chehade… just read it!)
  • A piece that starts with the letter A (My latest piece about climate change.)
  • A piece that is less than 3 minutes (Short and sweet poem about taking time to be by yourself.)

Thank you as always Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她) for such thought-provoking questions.
