Get inspired by this sportscaster’s 2 year quit alcohol transformation

If you’ve had even a modicum of interest in the sports world in the last 20 years, you’ve probably heard of Dan O’Toole.

Moreso if you’re a Canadian. O’Toole was a co-host of Canada’s flagship edition of TSN Sportscentre with his pal Jay Onrait for many, many years.

Their on-screen chemistry took them on a whirlwind tour of North American sports broadcasting, one that unfortunately ended when O’Toole was fired by TSN in a cost-cutting measure two years ago.

Prior to that, he and Onrait had ridden their popularity here to a gig hosting Fox Sports Live on FS1 — a show that was canceled after a change in upper management at the network took it in a different direction.

O’Toole has since landed on his feet, hosting his own sponsored podcast and serving as a spokesman for one of Canada’s nascent sportsbooks.

More importantly, his firing from TSN was the catalyst for getting alcohol out of his life so he could focus on his next chapter.

Two years, massive results

This week, O’Toole celebrated two years of sobriety. And what a transformation it has been.

Here’s what he wrote in an Instagram post celebrating the milestone:

“2 pictures. 2 years apart. 2 years sober.

“2 years ago I woke up and said three words: ‘I need help.’ Saying those three words changed my life.

“I wake up today full of gratitude, surrounded by people that want nothing from me, just for me to be loved and supported.

“And the best part, I am present to enjoy all of it.”

O’Toole’s firing could have been an excuse for him to sink deeper into addiction.

As he has said before, “sportscaster” is a very specialized job, and there are only two major sports broadcasters in Canada.

Given he was canned by one, his odds of getting hired weren’t great. He struggled to find work.

Yet he instead chose to take it as a sign that he needed to re-evaluate what he was doing and where he was headed.

A big reset

In an interview with Daily Hive on the one-year anniversary of his firing and sobriety, he explained:

“When you get ousted from a job you’ve had your entire life, you kind of sit back and reflect and say, what do you do from here?”

For O’Toole, this meant checking himself into a voluntary treatment centre to begin a “complete overhaul of my life.”

He hasn’t looked back, and the transformation captured in his Instagram pictures is a testament to that.

O’Toole’s story touches on an important point: work life can have an enormous impact on your mood because it takes up so much of your time.

Low mood induced by work stress can then increases your odds of turning to drugs to cope with whatever challenges you’re facing.

I really love O’Toole’s story, because job dissatisfaction was one of the reasons I started drinking and one of the reasons I stopped.

I knew that, if I didn’t get alcohol out of my life, I’d never have the time or energy to pursue my side hustle passions and I’d piss away the rest of my days doing uninspiring work and numbing myself to it with alcohol at night.

Although my work life turned around and I found a job I like working with great people, alcohol kept me from taking that next step and pursuing my life-long dream of starting my own business.

Now, with a clear mind, high energy, and more time than I ever believed I had in the past, I’ve taken my side business income from non-existent to almost $5,000 in the five months since I quit alcohol.

Oh, and I’m in the best shape of my life and, you know … happy.

And I’m just getting warmed up.

O’Toole, too, offers an inspiring reminder of what’s possible when you choose to get drugs and alcohol out of your life.

“It took me 46 years to be the most present I’ve ever been,” he told Daily Hive. “I mentally and physically feel the best I’ve ever probably felt in my life.”

I hope you enjoyed his story and draw inspiration from it. Have a great weekend!
