Garden Reflections

Lessons learned for next year

Photo, K.Barrett, author

From my experience, most growing seasons don’t turn out exactly as planned. I had a lot planned. Some of it worked out.

Overall Reflections

Once I was fully vaccinated I decided to travel more than I expected, so I didn’t plant everything I planned. I also didn’t tend as well as I would have if I was home more.

My best producers were lettuce, tomatoes, johnny-jump-ups, and sugar snap peas. I only got a little bit of purple broccoli, but I have also enjoyed the yellow flowers in the picture above as it goes to seed. I hope for more broccoli next year. It was so sweet!

My sugar snap peas and lettuce produced again this fall. That was a great way to end the growing season!

Top 5 Lessons

  1. Next year when I am ready to plan my garden I will be more mindful of my summer plans and how my garden will be tended when I am traveling.
  2. Starting seeds inside is something that I always get a late start on. I want to start earlier next year so the plants are more established before I put them out.
  3. Right now at the end of the season I am talking to fellow gardeners to benefit from their growing season lessons and best practices from thier past experiences. I am learning a lot.
  4. Weather. I want to pay closer attention to the weather and be more proactive than just reactive. I will be better able to plan ahead and be me more diligent in tending the actual needs of my garden.
  5. Remember how beautiful and brilliantly flavored the boutny is. Growing food is every bit worth the work. Here is my best recipe from growing this year:

Thanks for reading! I hope everyone enjoyed a successful growing season and also enjoys the beauty of the post-growing season!
