OUR PHOTO STORIES FEBRUARY CHALLENGE

Funniest Pet Photo

And why my entry may be disqualified

This is not my funniest pet photo. This is just my dog, Shen, in a mood because I am not massaging her. The photo is the property of the author.

I appreciate I may be disqualified for my funniest pet photo on the basis that it is not a living animal. But hear me out.

My sister is allergic to animals. She gets asthma and can’t breathe.

She was going through a rough patch, and I decided she needed cheering up. Pets can do that, I thought. So, I spent ages looking for fake ones for her and found realistic cats that breathed and purred. I think they had a battery in them somewhere.

But they cost A LOT. Maybe it was a Lithium battery. They also had fur that looked suspiciously real, and I didn’t want to risk it. So, instead of wrecking my credit rating, I had a rethink.

I remembered that my sister loves to do creative things, so I went in search of something she could “do”. I found the perfect present. Or so I thought.

I found a marvellous felting kit that came with a bonus. She could create her very own pet mouse, sans fur. And it was only £7.50.

The picture on the front of the kit demonstrates how the finished article should look:

Isn’t it cute? Photo from the front of the felting kit, property of the author. The original is by Rachel Austin, who gave me permission to take MY photo.

I got myself a kit first to make sure it was not a scam and created this little fellow.

This is still not the funniest pet photo. Photo property of the author.

OK, it was nothing like the picture on the box, but I figured it had its own personality. And I had not been scammed. Emboldened, I sent my sister the kit so she could create her own pet mouse.

She sent me a picture:

This is still not my entry for the funniest pet photo. The photo is the property of the author because I bought the copyright from my sister. Edited in Canva

I questioned whether it could stand up by itself. She sent me a second photo.

THIS is my entry for the funniest pet photo. It is the property of the author because my sister sold me this copyright, too.

I’m not sure if I cheered my sister up or whether she went into a pit of despair at creating this monstrosity. It rather looks as if it may have been the victim of a failed hanging attempt. I was afraid to ask. But she certainly cheered me up. I fell off my chair laughing.

PS: YOU can cheer me up, too. Get the kit and send me your photos.

Thanks to Susie Kearley for setting this challenge.
