Summary

Officer Rahul Arya is investigating the disappearance of Hannah Jenkins, a student with a history of mental illness, after she was reported missing by her boyfriend, Jonathan White, on December 25, 2020.

Abstract

On Christmas Day, Officer Arya was called to conduct a well-being check on Hannah Jenkins, an international student from England, who had not been in contact with her boyfriend for six hours. Despite efforts to locate her within her residence and throughout the campus, including reviewing card tap history and CCTV footage, she was not found. Hannah's history of mental illness and a previous incident where she was taken to the hospital for depression were noted. The search expanded city-wide with the help of the city police, and the Chief and the Dean of Students were notified.

Opinions

  • The author suggests a sense of urgency and concern for Hannah Jenkins' well-being due to her history of mental illness and the fact that she was alone during the holiday season because of travel restrictions.
  • The detailed account of the search, including the use of technology like card tap history and CCTV footage, indicates a thorough and methodical police investigation.
  • The involvement of multiple officers, the Resident Director, and the eventual city-wide search effort reflect the seriousness with which the situation was treated by the authorities.
  • The mention of a previous incident involving Hannah Jenkins on Halloween suggests a pattern of mental health issues, which may imply that the author believes this context is relevant to her current disappearance.
  • The author may be emphasizing the impact of the pandemic on international students, as Hannah was unable to return home for Christmas, potentially affecting her mental state.

Officer Arya's Police Report

On Friday, December 25, 2020, at approximately 01:39 am, I, Officer Rahul Arya, was dispatched to 1408 North Elms, room 606, for a well-being check. Dispatch received a call from student Jonathan White, who requested that we check on his girlfriend, resident student Hannah Jenkins, due to H. Jenkins not answering calls to J. White for the last 6 hours. While in the cruiser, I learned from Dispatcher Aliyah Begum that H. Jenkins, an international student from England, could not return to her country for Christmas due to pandemic international travel restrictions and has a long history of mental illness.

In the lobby of the 1408 building, I was met by Sgt. Holmes. We confirmed that H. Jenkins lived in room 606 with Security Officer Lee at the front desk. I instructed Officer Lee to notify the Resident Life office and have a staff member meet us there. Sgt. Holmes and I went up to the 6th floor. We knocked on the door several times and announced our presence. No one answered.

A few minutes later, Resident Director Malaika Oyawale arrived. M. Oyawale tried contacting H. Jenkins on her cell phone, but calls went to voicemail. RD M. Oyawale opened room 606, and three of us entered the room. H. Jenkins was not there. Sgt. Holmes instructed Officer Turner and Rodriguez in the lobby to check each floor’s common area to search for H. Jenkins. Then, Sgt. Holmes contacted campus card services to retrieve H. Jenkins’ card tap history.

I went on the radio asking all officers to check if H. Jenkins was checked in as a guest in another resident hall, but the results returned negative. I also spoke to two neighbors down the hallway, but they knew nothing about H. Jenkins.

I called back J. White to gather more information. While getting details on their last in-person meeting on December 10, when they went on a movie date, I vaguely remembered reading a report from last Halloween involving H. Jenkins. I asked J. White where he was at that moment. J. White told me he was at his parents' house in Derry, New Hampshire, for the Christmas vacation, but he resides in Newport, RI, and commutes to campus. J. White told me that he and H. Jenkins had issues in their relationship, but everything was fine the last time he saw her. I asked him if he knew any close friends of H. Jenkins. He said he did not. I ended the call, informing J. White that I would call him back if I had more questions. Officer Turner and Rodriguez, on the radio, notified me that they did not find H. Jenkins in the building.

Sgt. Holmes received the information from Card Services that H. Jenkins tapped her card at the front desk of the 1408 building at approximately 09:14 pm on December 24th, 2020. Officer Lee, working at the front desk, then informed Sgt. Holms and I that he saw H. Jenkins left the building all by herself around 11:15 pm on December 24th, 2020. He confirmed by checking the recordings of the CCTV footage.

Back in the police office room of the 1408 building lobby, I found the case report involving H. Jenkins. According to Case #20–1004, on Thursday, October 31, 2020, at approximately 11:23 pm, Officer Jean Baptiste was dispatched to the 1408 building after H. Jenkins reached out to Dispatch and reported she was suffering from depression and wanted to talk with someone. Officer Jean Baptiste transported H. Jenkins to Eden Medical Hospital.

I informed Sgt. Holmes right away about the situation. Sgt. Holmes contacted city police to help with a search for H. Jenkins. A city-wide radio transmission has been sent out to search for H. Jenkins. Sgt. Holmes contacted the Chief and the Dean of Students.

There is nothing further to report.
