From Rage Rant to Rich Read: My Lucky Anti-Clickbait Success Story

No, success is not about pure luck: The harder I work, the luckier I become!

My third Partner Program post on Medium made over $100.

I was lucky, right?

It was pure luck! There’s nothing wrong with being humble sometimes and allowing luck to take the credit, but this is not one of those times.

Saying I was lucky, or saying someone else was lucky undermines achievement! I’ve heard this so many times in my life.

They were lucky! You’re lucky! He was in the right place at the right time! She got lucky because her boss spotted her in her first week.

Just luck?

Let me explain “The Luck”

It started with me reading many articles about how to be successful on Medium.com and about 60% of those articles told me nothing! Of that 60% most were pure clickbait and others were more like

LOOK HOW GREAT I DID! Which is pretty much just as useless as the click-me titles.

So as you can imagine, this annoyed me. These blogs were wasting my time! So I wrote a bit of a rage post (Medium Story Clickbait Titles).

The Luck Element Of Writing

Did I just write a rage post and get lucky? The post took me twenty minutes to write from idea to first draft. Another twenty minutes or so of tweaking and then final editing, including putting the whole thing through Grammarly.

The Tweaking Of Fortune

What did the tweaking involve?

First, I made sure to get keywords embedded naturally into the article, such words as generic writing, articles written by AI, How to Sell Your Book on Amazon, and so on.

Next, I made the sub-headings in the article clickbait-style that mention other keywords that I wanted to pay attention to.

After that were the tags/ topics for Medium.

Increasing The Luck Even Further

Even more lucky! A publication had accepted me as a writer. What luck! Oh, wait… I applied to the publication, then I wrote an article that the editor read, accepted, and published.

How did all that effort turn into luck?

Sure, except this month, I’ve done it again. The post isn’t as popular as the previous month but still doing pretty good!

Right Place At The Right Time

The right place at the right time! There’s a really simple way to be at the right place at the right time. And that is to be in the right place all the time!

Where is the right place?

Here on Medium, I had control over the place as in the publication, but I had zero control over the time of posting my articles as that was up to when the editor accepted it, and other factors such as timezone, if the publication has a set time to publish, and so on.

And I want it noted that neither of the posts started to make money for at least a day or two!

“The harder I work the luckier I get”

This is really what it comes down to. Those who bemoan how lucky you are are just not putting in the same amount of work, or they are working as hard as you but in the wrong places.

Put yourself in the right place!
