From Everybody to Your Ideal Audience
The tip to help you define your clients.

The best way to get your first customer is to define your audience. Who will your efforts and knowledge help the most? I know it is hard to choose.
In school, we learned to be generalists. Until we had to think about our college major, we got taught a bit of everything. We did the sciences. Plus, history, English, a foreign language, mathematics, and a physical sport. Yes, the curriculum was heavy.
If you’re ready to leave your school days behind, let us look at how to define a target audience.
How to Define Your Target Audience?
There was a time I thought these four questions were enough to define an audience:
- Who will not get results from your product or service?
- Who do you not want to engage with your content?
- Whose pain points are you not passionate about resolving?
- Can you make money from the audience you want to attract?
But these questions are only the beginning. If you want people to see themselves in your content, here is how you go deeper:
- Males or females?
- Shrink: What age group?
- Shrink: What is their expert level, body size, health, or relationship status?
- Shrink: Who are their friends or with who do they live?
- Shrink: What are their beliefs, goals, or motivators?
- Shrink: What are their interests? (optional)
- Shrink: Do they have kids? What are the ages of these children?
- Shrink: Where do they spend most of their time?
- Shrink: Where do they live?
- Shrink: How much do they earn per month? (optional)
- Shrink: Price.

An Example of the Technique in Use:
Let us try it for a social media manager.
- Both males and females
- 30–50 age range
- Beginner who can follow instructional videos solo.
- Live with their children and might have a partner.
- Their goal is to be a work-from-home mom.
- They own t-shirt businesses on Etsy
- Yes, two to three kids. The children are under 6.
- In their home with their family.
- Atlanta, Georgia, USA
- Their new business earns under $5,000 per month.
- $47 membership
Thus, you know that your clients have time-sensitive schedules. And will get interrupted frequently. Your product or service should be of the done-for-you or plug-and-play variety. The membership should also have a simple interface.
Who gets excluded? Seasoned business owners earning over $10,000 per month. Why does this group get excluded? Your business model does not include unique and exclusive customization.
Exceptions? Yes, you can entertain sales from other audience groups. But the 2–3 young kids, work-from-home moms with a startup Etsy store are your primary focus group.
