Summary

The poem "The Freedom-Dilemma" by Anthi Psomiadou reflects on the struggle between the comfort of the familiar and the allure of independence.

Abstract

The narrative poem, "The Freedom-Dilemma," uses the metaphor of a bird with a broken wing to explore the complexities of freedom and security. It describes the bird's return to its family after facing the harsh realities of the outside world, where it encounters dangers and discomforts that challenge its desire for independence. The bird is torn between the safety of home and the call of the skies, ultimately choosing to embrace the latter after a period of introspection and maternal care. The poem emphasizes that freedom comes at a cost, which includes facing one's fears and accepting the risks that come with growth and exploration. The bird's decision to fly towards the sun, Helios, symbolizes its acceptance of these challenges in pursuit of self-discovery and the true essence of freedom.

  • The poem posits that the decision to embrace freedom is a personal journey that requires introspection and the willingness to leave one's comfort zone.
  • It also subtly critiques the naivety of longing for independence while ignoring its costs, emphasizing that every choice in life comes with its own pair of profits and costs.

The sky always wins in the end

It came back with a broken wing, needing the family’s warm embrace. Aerial roads are full of dangers. Winds are not moms; they don’t caress. They slap and push and break comfort zones, introducing to you life’s demanding roles. Home becomes a large magnet; you want to go back to the familiar nest. Flying towards it, you sense the conflict; you want independence but you only like its profit. Oh, it only comes as a pair; the cost is always beside. Take it or live it, dear self; it’s time to decide. But, even if you reject this pair about independence, your choice will also have a pair like this, so compare. Which of the two costs worth its profit, according to your criteria? Make your lists, observe, search your inner encyclopedia. While focused on the monologue inside, it forgot the pain of the bone; at home arrived. It was ready to say “I’m not going out there again mom”, but stopped and thought let’s sleep on it tonight. Enjoyed the treatment of the mother, thinking that she won’t be here forever. The next morning, preening by mom had brought results. Nightly underneath procedures had calculated the costs. The sky was calling through the salpinx of freedom. Our bird answered back by flying towards Helios.

Preening: a maintenance behavior found in birds that involves the use of the beak to position feathers, interlock feather barbules that have become separated, clean plumage, and keep ectoparasites in check. Salpinx: a trumpet-like instrument of the ancient Greeks. Helios: the Sun
