We are products of our environment

This is my first in a series of articles responding to Dr Mehmet Yildiz’s challenge to produce a short quality article with three take home points each day for thirty days.

I have chosen to use Wikipedia’s main page as inspiration, choosing one topic from their “Did You Know” section as topical inspiration.

Sky Brown is the youngest professional skateboarder in the world. Born July 12, 2008 she is currently 11 years old. Sky was born in Japan, the product of a Japanese mother and British Father.

Sponsored by Nike, Sky is the youngest sponsored athlete in the world, placing third at the World Skateboarding Championship in 2019 and was the first female to ever land a frontside 540 at the X Games.

Sky is one of five Britons attempting to qualify for skateboarding events at the 2020 Summer Olympics (which have now been pushed back to the summer of 2021) and seemed posed to qualify based on her world ranking and previous success.

Sky does not have a skateboarding coach, instead relying on YouTube videos for inspiration, while also cultivating her own large following with over 5 million views of her videos on YouTube and over 472,000 Instagram followers.

What We Can Learn from Sky

Sky grew up in a family of skateboarders, and attended a preschool equipped with a skate park. Surely, she has opportunities to do whatever she pleases in life but chose to embrace the culture and activity presented to her.

But Sky not only embraced her particular family culture and the opportunities so individually presented her, but she leaned into them; hard.

Take home points:

  • We are all offered unique environments and opportunities at all ages in our lives
  • We can have success if we identify our unique environment embrace what it offers
  • Once we identify and embrace our opportunities, we need to lean into them and make them our own

What is distinctive in your life right now? What opportunities are staring you in the face because of your unique relationships with family, friends and your environment?

How are you taking advantage of your exclusive opportunities?

Are you dabbling at pursuits? Or are you jumping in with both feet and fully committing? Are you leaning in hard to your opportunities?

I think an 11-year-old skateboarder can offer us some valuable insight into our own lives, it certainly has inspired me.
