Ford Offering Free Tesla Adapters to EV Owners
Tesla made Supercharger adapters for non-Tesla EVs to charge using Tesla’s Superchargers. Ford supplying free adapters to Ford EV owners.
Ford is now providing free Tesla Supercharger adapters to their customers who own Ford electric vehicles. Usually these adapters are expensive at around $230, but Ford wants to provide the first adapter to its EV customers for free for a period of time.
Ford customers are now able to reserve their free adapter through their FordPass smartphone app. Ford plans to continue offering these free adapters to Ford EV owners until July 1st. Ken Williams, the director of charging and energy services at Ford, stated:
“This will more than double our access to fast charging within the US and Canada with the addition of greater than 15,000 chargers with the Tesla Supercharger network.”
While Ford EV owners will each be receiving their Tesla Supercharger adapter, it won’t be possible for every single EV owner to receive their adapter so soon.
The reason why is that Ford is relying on Tesla to produce enough adapters to meet demand from electric vehicle owners, and Ford expects that supply may be limited early on.
CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, stated that he never intended for the Supercharger network to be a “walled garden” to stay exclusive to Tesla owners. Ford explained that its customers can now access the majority of Tesla’s Supercharger network through the use of the adapter.
Ford plans to eventually produce future EVs with factory-installed Tesla NACS (North American Charging Standard) ports, which will remove the need for Tesla Supercharger adapters since the electric vehicles will be able to connect right to the Supercharger networks. These updated Ford electric vehicles are expected to come in 2025 or later.
