Tesla recalls 2 Million Cars — 50% of Teslas in U.S. — Over a Tiny Mistake

This tiny mistake that the NHTSA found will cause Elon Musk trouble to fix, and some points lost for Tesla stock. The EV giant decides to recall Tesla cars.

Tesla is recalling around 50% (2.2 million) of their electric vehicles because of a tiny mistake that the company made. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) claims that Tesla’s electric vehicles have a problem with their warning signals.

The NHTSA explained that Tesla’s brake, park and antilock brake warning lights have a smaller font size than what is required by federal safety standards in the United States. The warning signal text could make critical safety information hard to read, which could increase the risk of a crash.

Tesla responded by saying that it isn’t aware of any crashes or injuries that have been caused by this problem.

The NHTSA stated, “Warning lights with a smaller font size can make critical safety information on the instrument panel difficult to read, increasing the risk of a crash.”

Tesla is recalling most but not all of their electric vehicle models. The EVs that will be recalled include the 2012–2023 Model S, 2016–2024 Model X, 2017–2023 Model 3, 2019–2024 Model Y, and 2024 Cybertruck vehicles.

“An incorrect font size is displayed on the instrument panel for the Brake, Park, and Antilock Brake System (ABS) warning lights,” the NHTSA claimed.

“As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 105, ‘Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems’ and 135, ‘Light Vehicle Brake Systems’.”

Tesla responded by providing free software updates to fix this tiny mistake of warning signal text size being too tiny (no pun intended) for the NHTSA’s safety standards.

How this mistake affected Tesla stock (TSLA)

On February 1st, Tesla stock was strong at $189.57 per share. On February 2nd, after recalling millions of Tesla cars, the stock price dropped 3.71% to $182.88 at its lowest.
