For Those In Peril On The Sea

February Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Statues”

When will my daddy come home?

Pittenweem is a gloriously quaint village in the East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. The white corbel-stepped houses surround a sheltered harbour filled with fishing boats that look like naive caricatures of themselves.

It’s surprisingly sunny here, a long way metaphorically, though not physically, from the rain-hammered west-coast, and a favourite with holidaymakers.

Every summer the village is thronged with people attending what must be the most scenic art festival in the world. Many of my favourite artists and artisans have exhibited here including Angus Ross, Robert Mach, and Lynn McGregor.

The village, of course, originally derived its living from the sea and is still the most active fishing port in the area. For those of us who live inland and whose main connection with the lives of fishermen is a plate of fish and chips on a Friday night, it’s easy to forget the extreme danger these men put, and continue to put, their lives in so as to bring home food to their families and to us.

The Pittenweem Fishermen’s Memorial was commissioned after almost 5 years of local fundraising, and created by sculptor Alan Herriot DA ARBS. You can read more about what it means to the village here.
