Summary

Mary Chang, creator of the Six Word Photo Story Challenge, invites photographers and writers to submit their six-word stories inspired by the theme "Statues," with a focus on a photo of the sculpture "The Birds" by Myfanwy MacLeod in Vancouver's Olympic Village.

Abstract

The "undefined" website presents the February challenge for the Six Word Photo Story Challenge, led by Mary Chang. Participants are encouraged to capture and share a six-word story that encapsulates the essence of statues, taking inspiration from the 18-foot-tall sculpture "The Birds" in Vancouver. This colossal bird statue, an allegory for the common house sparrow, stands 50 times larger and serves as a thought-provoking muse for the challenge. The submission deadline is February 29, 2024, at noon PST. The website also provides submission guidelines for those interested in joining the publication and tagging a diverse list of writers, both current and prospective, to engage with the prompt.

Opinions

  • The local and tourist reactions to "The Birds" sculpture range from perceptions of beauty and majesty to descriptions of it as intimidating, scary, and "big badass bird."
  • House sparrows, the inspiration behind the sculpture, are considered an invasive species in North America, although they are commonly seen in Vancouver.
  • Writers and photographers are encouraged to interpret the theme "Statues" in a creative and succinct manner, with an optional two-minute backstory to accompany their six-word photo story.
  • The challenge is hosted on Medium and welcomes new contributors to the publication, offering an opportunity for writers to be featured and gain visibility.
  • The challenge aims to foster a community of creatives who can express complex stories and emotions through the brevity of six words paired with visual imagery.

The Biggest Bird in Vancouver

February Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Statues”

He’s not your typical house sparrow.

This is one of two bird sculptures, “The Birds,” created by Canadian artist Myfanwy MacLeod, which is situated at Vancouver’s Olympic Village. He’s 50x larger than a house sparrow and stands a whopping 18 feet (5.5 meters) tall.

Although it’s common to see house sparrows fly around in Vancouver, these birds are an “alien species” and are not native to North America.

The locals and tourists describe the bird statue differently — beautiful, majestic, humongous, intimidating, scary, creepy, and “big badass bird.” What do you think?

Can you tell a story in six words that represents “Statues” inspired by a photo that you snapped yourself? A 2-minute backstory to accompany your six-word photo story is optional.

Submissions are now open for the February “Statues” Challenge led by Vidya Sury, Collecting Smiles. The deadline to submit your story is NOON, February 29, 2024, Pacific Standard Time. See below for details!
