For People Who Rely on Their Emotions To Guide Them Through Life

And a recipe to lead your emotions rather than being led by them

Ever since we were babies, our emotions have helped us through communicating our needs, and expectations. Whether it was because we were hungry or, we wanted a certain toy to be ours, emotions came to the surface as we demanded what we desired.

But as we grow older, and leave our childhood days behind, being guided by these same emotions may not be as reliable as it once was. This is because our emotions do not evolve as much as we do, and so their immaturity prevents us from seeing reality for what it is.

Of course, emotions are not useless and have their own purposes.

Whether it is which emotions certain events trigger in us, or what we want to feel, they are keys that open the doors of the inner world. So they can help us to understand ourselves better. But when we trust them to make sense of the external world, then they may become misleading.

Yes, there may be times where our emotions reflect reality perfectly, but there is always a need for a second check since these feelings tend to be affected by our past experiences, and scars that these events left behind.

I, as an INFP in MBTI types, was so used to prioritizing my feelings to guide me through life and felt as always they reflected the reality, but then I read a book called “101 Essays That Will Change the Way You Think”, and a sentence there changed my perspective forever.

In the book, the author Brianna Wiest talks about our tendency to trust our emotions too much, and she advises not to take them too seriously, since there is a chance that they may not be reflecting the actual reality.

This advice made me realize that to follow your heart was not to always surrender to emotions, and it was to let them guide me through myself, my inner world. This way, I could really understand myself and thus see the world clearer.

So yes, when analyzed for the right purposes, emotions can be powerful guides for us to understand ourselves, but to view the outside world through their lens, and trusting them blindly, can mislead us.

Thank you for reading.
