Following Thousands Of People on Medium Actually Ruins Your Success
Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” ― Edward Everett Hale

Let’s ponder…
You go to a conference event full of thousands of people.
In 2 hours, how many people do you think you would establish real relationships with?
20? 30? Maybe at most 50?
And when you attend another conference, how many new people can you talk with without losing ties with those you spoke to last time?
5? 10?
What about the next one?
Only 2?
In the end, the amount will keep decreasing over time.
Then why are you following thousands of people?
In this article, I will help you:
- Understand when and how to follow others
- Discover how following ‘everyone’ ruins your marketability
- Effectuate the ‘follow’ button to utilize its net benefit
Why Are You Following Thousands Of People?
Recently, as Medium’s popularity grows with the advent of new members, I see more and more accounts that have decided to follow literally thousands of others.
Having seen this identical behavior on other social media platforms, it makes me wonder…
Why are people here making the same mistake?
Let’s not underestimate the ‘follow’ button. It matters a lot.
Why?
- It helps you quickly reach the content that interests you the most
- It allows you to make friends and maintain them
- It helps you to follow sources of inspiration
- It formulates a personality about you — who you follow shows others what topics you may be interested in
If you follow thousands of accounts, it’s like having thousands of acquaintances with little to zero connection.
Let’s be honest, if we follow thousands of people, are we able to remember all their names or even one of their works that really interested us?
Even if there were only 300 of them, wouldn’t you be completely confused on what to say about each of them? Or even to them?
So why are you following thousands of people?
Following Thousands Of Accounts Will Never Guarantee You Success
Veteran users who have been active on other social media platforms know the following strategy:
Follow as many accounts as possible, and at least half of them will follow you back. If you reach the maximum number that you can follow, start removing some accounts and adding new ones. It will make your account grow fast.
I have a feeling that this mentality has shifted to Medium.
What’s wrong with that? Let me tell you..
- You will quickly notice an increasing number of followers, but in reality the activity in your account will remain the same or get worse.
- You will earn nothing more than usual.
- Your articles will not gain more popularity.
Why?
Well, because all the people you’ve followed think the same way!
Most of them will not care about your work and will not find any inspiration from it… because they will not even read it.
Having a large number of ‘friends’ means less time for each of them. Or having no time at all.
THE NUMBER OF FOLLOWERS DOES NOT DETERMINE YOUR SUCCESS, BUT THE LEVEL OF ENGAGEMENT AND ACTIVITY.
Treat each of your followers with their deserved respect because your success depends on them.
Before You Decide To Follow Another Person…

You should ask yourself these questions:
- Do I find the main topics of this person’s articles interesting?
- Does their content have a direct benefit for me?
- Could I possibly find any inspiration, knowledge, or guidance from these written pieces?
- Do I want to even develop a friendship with this person?
- Do I want to commit to being regularly active on their account?
Because if most of the answers are ‘no’ then… why would you follow?
There should be a specific reason behind each press of the ‘follow’ button.
It is a pity that Medium does not have a way to categorize and tag the reason for following a person as we do for our articles.
Perhaps there can be a way for each account to accumulate tags and show what their vibe is about. Or at least what categories they fall in as a contributor on this platform.
Then maybe it would be easier for us to decide.
So let’s be honest and loyal.
After all, we ourselves would like our followers to have a specific reason why they are following us, right?
Isn’t it nice to know that our articles are useful, entertaining, or inspiring to others?
Let everyone know what they mean to you.
Good luck and follow carefully!
