Follow Your Heart, but Take Your Mind With You

Thursday Prompt: Dedicated journeyer on the path that unites the heart & mind

Whenever there is an argument between your heart and your mind, follow your heart. — Les Brown

For there are things the heart can comprehend that the mind cannot, he said.

It has become increasingly true in my experience that, indeed the heart and the mind can sometimes bump head. Not that they both seek evil for the being, but that they desire what is best for me.

It will be wise therefore if I see them both as guides with differing wisdom. None is supposed to rule over the other. I believe there are times to let each lead.

For a long time, I was caught between balancing two polar desires, the desire to make an impact, and the desire to have a lovely home. The truth? I want both. Both my heart and mind agree — thank goodness. The problem thus is how to get there?

My minds job, therefore, is to focus on the journey — how to reach the desired destination. My heart’s duty is to focus on the quality of our work as we journeyed. To put all that we are into all that we do. For those we do it for, deserves nothing short of.

The heart and the mind have their place, their roles and duty. It is not wisdom to silent one. Often I have seen people grow cold — their response to life’s disappointments and chaos. They’ve shut their heart permanently. Unbeknownst to them, they've shut off life. Life is in experience — experience; the means by which life connects with us. We know we live because we feel. Only the dead tells no tale. Because only a dead heart feels nothing.

While so many others have ignored their mind and followed their hearts. Failing as they go through life because life is both the mixture of practicality just as it is experience. While there are forces that propel life, there also are principles that govern life. The mind is the understanding and the compass that helps circumvent these oceans of laws and practicalities.

So to ignore either one is pain and suffering.

There are extremities in life. The winter and the summer, the blistering heat of a volcano and the freezing cold of the artic. The purest laughter of a baby and the deepest agony of an old man. But that is not where life happens. and to subscribe to one side, and render the other side of the coin of no effect, is to have done a great injustice to life.

Life is happening somewhere in between the deep blue sea and the dry Sahara desert. Life happens when it's cold. and when it's hot, it is life still.

we accept life in all its extremities, mid-normals and complexities.

As the saying goes, follow your heart, but take your mind with you. You’ll need them both.
