Why you must focus on reads and not views.

Well, that’s simply because a view is just a view, someone who did not necessarily read your story. Many people also just clap on Medium for the sake of it, but a read and a Medium comment confirms that your audience is interested in your work.

Then you have an active audience, instead of just a Medium audience. Having 250K “dead” Medium followers and views with no response is worth much less than 1000 Medium followers who read and comment on your work. This is why I am so NOT a “follow for follow” fan.

My goal is to build a topic-targeted and GEO-targeted responsive Medium audience. Not just an audience as an impressive follower count worth little more than an impressive display.

Eventually, your views-to-reads ratio will start increasing gradually. Now the below illustration of my latest Medium analytics at the time of writing this article might not be that impressive.

But you must never focus on just the Medium views or their numbers for that matter. It’s complicated (and English is not my first language) because increasing views are also important…lol! I’ll try to explain in a bit. See how many of those views actually read your content.

That is where your Medium power lies. Also, bear in mind that I had to start over with Medium because I made stupid mistakes. So, I have just been back on Medium since October 6, 2022. My goal is to reach at least 90 posts within 90 days.

This is Medium story number 89 on my list and the content bank I’m building. One Medium story short of my target of 90 posts, but I still have 12 days left before January 6, 2023, when the 90 days are complete.

Above you can see 1,613 views with 443 reads (over a 30-day period) meaning I have around a 28% conversion as far as reads go. Now all I have to do is maintain the strategy and increase the views. In doing so, also increases the reads.

Let’s just say I make that 1,613 views, into 161,300 views over a 30-day period (which will take a while). That means around 45,164 reads, now, we all know how much sales can come from 45K targeted readers interested in your content.

Usually, with Warrior Plus for instance I have around 31 sales from 3623 “hops” or “views”. With 45K targeted visitors, that’s roughly 385 sales, based on these percentages. Around 1% sales conversion from “hops”, which sounds about right.

But that’s just to give you an idea of realistic expectations. Because that is why it is so important to keep writing. You must build up an article vault on Medium. Gradually increase your profitability.

Focus more on comments instead of claps.

As mentioned earlier. I find that many people just clap for the sake of it. But how will you know? Well, just look at your analytic results for the Medium views and reads ratio, then compare that with the fans (claps) ratio.

1000 claps with zero reads mean your audience might not be all that into your content. But if you’re like me, and the Medium partner program is not available in your country (South Africa). Then claps and views don’t mean much, not income-wise on Medium anyway.

But once the views start climbing and providing, you’re targeting the right audience. You will also see a gradual and consistent increase in reads. Not being able to be part of the Medium partner program, your reads are your opportunity.

Professionals that read your Medium stories, are also more likely to comment and perhaps even invite their audiences. Or add your Medium story to their lists. But when you write for beginners, in my experience, they are much more likely to comment.

In many cases, even ask for help. Making your power outside of the Medium partner program all about reads and comments. Especially when you use Medium for affiliate marketing, but that is a topic on its own. You might want to check out this article on that.

Have more responses than you do Medium stories.

This is a simple measure to check on your popularity-building skills. Responsible for getting recognized and gaining your audience’s trust. Having more responses than stories, mean you will soon experience the rush of getting recognized.

If you want to be recognized, then you must be active. You cannot be seen at the party if you’re not even there. Be present and respond to people so you can be recognized.

From the 89 (also counting this one) Medium stories I currently have on Medium. There are 1,184 responses, meaning comments, claps, and reads. I suggest having an insanely imbalanced ratio here. That’s roughly an average of 13 responses per post.

Meaning, for every Medium story I publish. I comment or get responded to at least 14 times before posting again. This can sometimes require a few days. Because as with your content, your comments must also be high quality.

How to gain recognition and build trust.

As we have just mentioned, commenting. In my opinion, the fastest way to get recognized and build trust with your Medium readers. The important part is to maintain both content quality and consistency. In doing so you will get recognized and win your audience’s trust.

Remember that when we say “consistency” we do not only mean medium stories. We also mean Medium responses, reads, and comments. If you’re out of ideas to write about, then read.

If you get tired of reading, then comment. But keep going, you don’t have to go fast, you only need to go forward. Focus on quality with commenting, offer solutions, and perhaps a bit of humour.

Write as if you speak to someone standing right in front of you, give your readers a space where they can familiarize themselves with you. A place where they can realize you also struggle with things.

But above all, be honest, sincere, humble, and kind. Those are the attributes of greatness, and your readers will see that in you. We need more of that, in a world sadly filled with hate, lust, and greed!
