Fishing in the Trollkiller Mountains
A Medium Adventurers League practice quest

To play this quest, your character needs to have a fishing rod, and at least one day's rations.You set out from the Adventurers League headquarters, hoping for a peaceful and productive day.
It’s a bright morning — ideal for heading high into the Trollkiller Mountains. What could be more pleasant? Or safer? And you have the perfect spot in mind for a spot of fishing.
But as you turn around a corner on your way up a familiar mountain path, a troll leaps out and attacks you!

Combat encounter: Troll ambush.
Challenge rating: Easy (roll 10+).Roll using brawn or magic.If you succeed, you hit the troll. He’s tough; you need to hit twice to kill him.
If you fail, you are slashed by his claws. Subtract 1 from health.You can flee back to the headquarters or to the inn, and return another day.If you are killed, click here. Otherwise, read on below.Why do you always see those creatures around here, you wonder, as you walk on? Clearly the troll-killers of old didn’t do a thorough enough job.
Soon, though, you have found your idyllic spot for fishing. You are able to relax in the midday sunshine. You eat your rations…
Remove one day’s rations from your character sheet.…find a comfortable spot, and settle down to fish.
Calming your mind and focusing on the clear water in front of you, you try to practice the patience and control you have been working on.
Encounter: Depths of patience.
Challenge rating: Easy (roll 10+).
Roll using wits.If you succeed, add +5 to the outcome of your fishing (see below)
If you fail, add nothing.At last, you feel the fish starting to bite. Or is it something else that is moving in the water?
Roll 1d20 on the following chart to find the outcome of your day’s fishing trip! If you end up with a number higher than 20, read the entry for 20. ***1: A water elemental rises from the river and attacks! Follow the instructions further down this page.2–4: A fish-warrior emerges, bearing a trident! It attacks; see below for the encounter.5-6: The water calms. You gain nothing, and leave empty handed.7-9: You gain enough fish to smoke for a couple of meals. Add 2 days’ rations to your inventory.10-12: The fish are plentiful. Add 2 days’ rations, and you gain enough to sell. Add five silver pieces to your character sheet.13-15: The fish are really biting!! Add 2 days’ rations, and you gain enough to sell. Add twenty silver pieces to your character sheet.16: You hook a mysterious, glittering stringy object... it is a stinging jellyfish tentacle. Add it to your to your character sheet.17: A healing potion is floating in the river, and you grab it! Add it to your to your character sheet.18: A box is floating in the river. You open it and find a chess set! Add it to your to your character sheet. You might find somewhere to challenge someone to a game.19: All this outdoor air is good for your constitution! You might not have caught a fish, you're brimming with health. Temporarily add +1 to your maximum health; this lasts until the end of your next quest.20: "It was this big!" The fish are biting and you are showing off. Add the same rewards as are listed under "13–15", and in addition, add or subtract one from reputation (your choice).If you find any of items 16 — 19, you can add them to your inventory, or go here to sell them.
If you must face the water elemental or fish-warrior, scroll down.
Otherwise, take what you have earned and head back down out of the mountains. On getting back, you must immediately take a night’s rest at the inn. It’s been a long day!

Encounter: Water elemental attack.Challenge rating: Medium (roll 15+).
Roll using brawn or magic.If you succeed, you hit. You need to land 2 hits to stun the water elemental. Then you can safely head to the inn for a night's rest.If you fail, you are hit. The elemental hits hard; subtract 2 from health each time you are hit.If you are killed, click here.
Encounter: Fish-warrior attack.Challenge rating: Easy (roll 10+).
Roll using brawn or magic.If you succeed, you hit. You need to land 2 hits to kill the fish warrior. Add its trident (+1 brawn) to your character sheet. Then you can safely head to the inn for a night's rest.If you fail, you are hit. Subtract 1 from health each time you are hit.If you are killed, click here.
If you have already met Txa’Pano and learned potions magic, you can add sinew of troll (x 1) to your inventory.Thanks for reading — and playing! ⚔️
