FIRST I THOUGHT COMMUNICATION IS KEY BUT IT’S REALLY COMPREHENSION

They hear you but they aren’t listening.

Lack of communication skills is one of the biggest threats in an intimate relationship. Paying attention to how your partner is feeling at every moment and not being afraid of letting your feelings be known to your partner is the type of pillar needed in building a strong and long-lasting intimate relationship.

My naive self once thought I was the perfect one in the relationship because I thought I was open-minded, respectful, honest and I’ve got good communication skills. I thought all of these are enough to keep a good relationship. But things started falling apart at one point and I’m feeling like we are arguing constantly, we started to act defensively, having long-lasting debates over the most trivial of things.

These eventually lead to disrespect, dishonesty, and ultimately stripped away the confidence we had in the relationship. We constantly made feeble attempts to make things work, tried having friendly debates, which escalates to 6+ hour-long aggressive argumentations without really saying anything of substance, until we decided to take a break from each other.

As a last-ditch effort in keeping our relationship going, we learned to swallow our pride. We soon realized that we are both talking and no one is listening. Good communication goes hand in hand with listening. We became more concerned about understanding each other’s point of view and listening empathetically to what each one has to say. And for the first time, it felt like we were going somewhere. We didn’t have to argue till we are out of breath to solve our crisis.

I feel like one can only truly say they’ve got good communication skills when their listening is of equal standard with it. If you don’t comprehend then it’s a waste of time. Communicating with someone who doesn’t comprehend is definitely one of the most frustrating things ever.

If you're like me and you already know the importance of good communication, you only have one job now, you should also be understanding. You need to try as much to understand your partner's point of view as much as yours.

Funny how we tried everything to get us back together but shut up and listen. We learned our lesson and now we apply this wisdom among friends, family, and in any social setting.
