Fire Up Your Endorphins
A response to Sherry McGuinn’s “Endorphin Rush”
People laughing and smiling always raise my spirits. I have noticed the same thing with my youngest son. If he hears someone laughing, he will laugh along. It is a human feature that we can experience group emotions, such as laughter.
The picture above shows a laughing trio. It lifts my spirits seeing their laughing and smiling faces.
Sherry McGuinn recently gave us a list of videos that help her smile and bring her joy in “Endorphin Rush.”
I am glad that I read and watched Sherry’s offerings. It sparked my imagination and got me looking around for videos that have brought me laughs.
In the spirit of lifting your spirits (as well as mine), here are a few of the videos that I’ve watched recently that have entertained me with hearty laughs that are good for the soul.
Sebastian Maniscalco does a hilarious stand-up routine about crazy people on the internet that you must watch. I laughed so hard just looking at Maniscalco’s physicality in performing the jokes. In these days when there are plenty of “Karens” and their male counterparts out there doing what Sebastian Maniscalco speaks of, it is nice to have the comic safety valve that comes from a deep belly laugh.
It clears the soul.
Another super funny comedy show that I didn’t appreciate until watching clips on YouTube is “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”
A classic clip that always makes me laugh when I watch it is when the crew decides to hold a “trial” in the bar after two of the regulars get into a traffic accident. The thing that makes it so funny is that they actually do a pretty good job of laying the foundation for some pretty crazy evidence. And, they railroad the guy who whose car was crashed into by Frank. But, absurdity mixed in with a little bit of truth for the way things sometimes work out in life is the comedy. Don’t they always say tragedy plus time equals comedy?

Classic!
Another great “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” bit is the trial of science vs. the Bible. It is held in the bar. Interesting and funny arguments are made. It is funny because once again it combines tragedy, bits of reality from our age today, and logical fallacies.
Another funny FX show I love is “Archer.” It’s biting commentary on the James Bond movies, arrogant spies (and now former spies turned drug dealers), and everything else going on in our world.
The best part is that I know someone who reminds me of Sterling Archer. That makes it even funnier when I watch the show.
An added bonus is the actor who does Archer’s voice also is the voice of Bob on “Bob’s Burgers.”
Comedy helps us to process the existential threats we face.
Kubrick did it during the Cold War with “Dr. Strangelove.”
Seth MacFarlane does the same with his “Quaghog Under Quarantine” episode of “Family Guy.”
