Hi there! If you’ve published fiction on Medium, you’ve come to the right place.

Fiction Friends is a virtual library and coffee shop for Medium writers and readers, and one of our primary purposes is providing a space for writers to share their already-published fiction on Medium by submitting story listings.

Story listings allow writers to share about their stories in detail. This helps potential readers connect with fiction that intrigues them the most!

Here’s an example of a story listing:

After these story listings are submitted, they are filed in The Fiction Friends Library according to genre, and have a chance to get featured in our newsletter, The Story List.

How to submit your story

  1. Pick a fiction story you have already published on Medium.
  2. Fill out the form below.
  3. Post your filled-out form in the comments section of this post!

The form

Here’s a blank form, ready to copy and paste into the comments section:

• Genre list: • Title: • Read time: • Genre(s): • Type: • Status: • Rating: • Tags: • Summary/excerpt/note: • Username: • Link:

And here’s how to fill it out!

Please read our guidelines and rules carefully before submitting a story.

Genre List

There are fifteen genres in our library. Which section should we put your story in?

You can only pick one genre list per story, so please choose carefully.

This should be based on your story’s primary genre. For example, if your fantasy story has a romantic subplot, you’d still file it under Fantasy.

Action & AdventureDystopianFantasyFolklore & MythologyGeneral & ContemporaryHistorical FictionHorrorHumorLiterary FictionMystery & CrimeParanormalRomanceScience FictionThriller & SuspenseWestern

(By the way, claps for your favorite genres are much appreciated! They help new readers discover the library.)

Title

This one is pretty self-explanatory, but if your story has multiple parts and each installment is titled differently, use the title of the entire story, not the title of the chapter.

Also, if your story’s headline is different than the story’s actual title, use the real title.

Read time

This should be based on Medium’s calculation (e.g. 3 min).

If your story contains multiple parts, feel free to include the total read time of all published installments combined (e.g. 3 min, 25 min total).

For information about how Medium’s read time is calculated, click here.

Genre(s)

List all applicable fiction genres here. Fiction Friends has sixteen genre lists, but there are scores of fiction genres and subgenres.

For example, maybe your Fantasy story is steampunk, too! Or perhaps you’ve filed your story under Action & Adventure, but it’s also a superhero and mystery story. Let us know!

Type

Is your story a short story or a flash fiction? Perhaps a novel, novelette, or novella? Web comics, LitRPGs, and narrative poetry are welcome, too!

If your story has multiple parts and is still ongoing, it’s fine to ballpark the length. You can always submit an updated listing after it’s finished.

For info on how fiction is categorized based on word count, click here.

Status

Is the story complete or ongoing? Let potential readers know here.

If your story ends on a cliffhanger but you do not intend on finishing it, please mark it unfinished or fragment.

Rating

Use the rating system of E, 8+, and 13+. (E stands for Everyone.)

This rating is for indicating the age appropriateness of your story’s content and themes, not the reading level or target audience.

The highest rating allowed for story listings is 13+.

Fiction Friends is designed to promote fiction to general audiences on Medium. As a guideline, your story’s content and themes should be appropriate for thirteen year olds and up.

No “not safe for work” stories, or stories with very disturbing, violent, or graphic material.

If you have questions or you are not sure if your story is appropriate for the 13+ rating, please feel free to ask for help in the comments.

Tags

Tags are a common feature on many web fiction platforms. They offer additional information about stories so readers can find the stories they want to read the most.

Unlike Medium’s Topic tags, which place your story in general categories, story tags on Fiction Friends are intended to help characterize your story, and can indicate plot elements, tropes, vibes — you name it!

For example: slice of life, Cinderella retelling, robots, enemies to lovers, espionage, melancholy, silly humor, baking competition, end of the world, et cetera.

You can add up to 20 tags per story.

Summary/excerpt/note

Finally, it’s time for your story’s hook!

This is where you include your story’s summary (“In a world…”), or an attention-grabbing excerpt, or a personal note about the background or inspiration for the story.

Whatever you choose, this is what should ideally “hook” readers and make them decide to click on your story.

Summaries, excerpts, or notes are limited to 100 words or less.

Username

Please include your Medium username (e.g. @your_username) so we can tag you when filing your story listing in the library.

You won’t receive a notification, but it offers an easy way for readers to check out your bio and profile when reading story listings.

Link

And last, but definitely not least: be sure to add the link to your story so we can find it and add it to our virtual library!

If your story is paywalled and you would like non-members to access it for free through our library, use a friend link in your submission and we’ll include it in the story listing.

If your story has more than one part, you may want to create a list for your story and link to that instead. This way, your potential readers will always have access to the latest installment, plus the option to save the list and receive notifications when you publish new installments.

Rules for Story Listings

  1. You can submit 3 story listings per calendar week. (Please note that this is subject to change!)
  2. You can share the same story once every 3 months, which will bump it back to the top of the list. Please put “Reshelve” at the top of your comment.
  3. If you are currently publishing a multi-part story or web novel, you can submit 1 updated story listing per month. If your multi-part story or web novel is already fully published, you can post 1 story listing for it every 3 months.
  4. Only promote your own original fiction. (Re-imagining and retelling public domain works is OK, but it must be your own writing.)
  5. No AI-generated fiction (e.g. ChatGPT). AI-generated images are acceptable, as long as they are not imitating living artists.
  6. No fan fiction.
  7. No real people fiction.
  8. No stories with explicit/erotic/adult content. This includes erotic images and avatars, and erotic language in user bios. In addition, stories published in publications that regularly and/or prominently feature erotic stories are also not allowed, because publications are included in story listings.
  9. No hateful and/or clearly harmful stories. No promoting violence, harassment, and/or hatred against groups of people; no gratuitously graphic and disturbing stories; no glorification or promotion of self-harm; and no exploitation of fictional minors. These are not only violations of our rules, but Medium’s rules as well.
  10. All stories submitted to Fiction Friends must comply with Medium’s site rules. Know them by heart!

Community Etiquette

It should be pretty obvious from the publication name, but we expect Fiction Friends contributors to be kind and friendly in their interactions with other writers and readers! This is a community space.
