Summary

The article discusses the futility of using the mechanical mind to cope with hatred and other painful emotions, advocating instead for moment-to-moment awareness to bring about change.

Abstract

The text delves into the nature of hatred as a painful emotion that the mechanical mind struggles to process effectively. It argues that the mechanical mind's approach of resistance or opposition to pain only perpetuates conflict and resistance within. True change, according to the author, comes from non-movement, an awareness that cannot be initiated by the thinking mind but arises from a deeper understanding of our conditioned reactions. This awareness allows one to see the mechanical mind's dumb logic and the ineffectiveness of mental tricks in resolving internal conflict. The author emphasizes that seeing and understanding one's conditioned reactions without succumbing to the comfort of mechanical suffering is crucial in dealing with painful feelings.

Opinions

  • The mechanical mind's attempts to stop pain by resisting or moving in the opposite direction are ineffective and only create further conflict.
  • Non-movement, a state that allows for the awareness of pain without resistance, is not something that can be initiated by the thinking mind.
  • Awareness of the mechanical mind's movements is not within the control of the thinking mind, which prevents it from being corrupted by mental cleverness and aggression.
  • The thinking mind often falsely claims credit for awareness, which is absurd since true awareness sees through all conditioned reactions without bias.
  • Continuing to live with the blindness of the mechanical mind's logic and expecting change is compared to lying to oneself and ignoring the guilt associated with this deception.
  • The author suggests that the key to addressing painful feelings may lie in the repeated act of seeing and understanding the mechanical mind's logic without giving in to the comfort of mechanical suffering.

Feelings Of Hatred

Working with painful feelings

Hatred, just like any other painful feelings, confronts our inability to work with pain. It exposes that we are at the mercy of the dumb logic of the mechanical mind.

When I feel hatred I can’t stop feeling its pain, but the mechanical mind tries to stop it by its dumb logic of resisting or moving in the opposite direction. It cannot do non-movement but only try to mimic a state of non-movement (or dropping) by further movement; even the idea of accepting or sitting with pain is further movement(becomes mechanical).

Non-movement cannot be initiated by the thinking mind. Because any initiation from the thinking mind with regards to this will be nothing but another movement of conflict or resistance within. One must be fed up with expecting the pure mechanical thinking mind to do the work for them and instead begin to appreciate awareness. Only our moment-to-moment awareness of our own conditioned mechanical nature can bring any change in this endless movement of conflict, not further mental tricks.

The only thing that is required is to simply see our conditioned reaction to painful feelings, that is, to simply see how we block awareness of pain rather than trying to heroically face pain or any such nonsense (which is nothing but holding on to blindness).

Luckily awareness or seeing of the movements of the mechanical mind is not in my hands; it’s not in the thinking mind’s control — which makes it impossible to be spoiled by mental cleverness and aggression once we begin to appreciate it, even though the thinking mind tries to convince that seeing is done by thoughts (which is absurd). Because it sees my conditioned reactions as it is, be it cleverness or self-violence or anything at all.

We cannot remain blind and expect to see, at least not for a long time, until one can’t escape the burden of guilt associated with constant lying that mechanical mind can save them and their fellow beings from slavery to the very mechanical mind.

Seeing and understanding this dumb logic of the mechanical mind repeatedly without succumbing to the comfort of mechanical suffering as to our current capacity might be the key. If not, our only option becomes to block the awareness of pain as we will always remain scared of painful feelings.
