Feedback Is a Gift

Fathers and sons should be honest with each other

Photo by JD Mason on Unsplash

I did it again. I went to my son’s room and read his essay. He told me he didn’t like me reading his stuff, but I couldn’t help it. I’m his father. I need to know he’s all right. I have the right to know! It’s my blood that runs in his veins. I can’t let it go awry and disrespect our family.

All these days and nights I spent honing my craft. All these hours I spent reading him books to shape his intellect.

That was an investment.

Should I be denied the right to see the returns? What if he doesn’t make good use of the knowledge I gave him. For free! He should be aware of that. He should be reminded that this is a gift not everyone has access to. He should be grateful for the privilege.

Even if he doesn’t care, I do. Our name has a history in his school; he’s the third generation to go there. What would my father say if I let his grand-son scratch the page instead of torturing his soul to find the best words? Does he want to ridicule our family?

The youth today! No loyalty to their ancestors.

They don’t even understand the concept, too focused on themselves. But we still live in a society. Without the community, we’re nothing. And the community’s kernel is the family. One has to respect that.

Maybe he doesn’t want to, but I’m a guardian. I have my duties. I can’t let this kind of essay he’s writing out of our home without corrections and ample modifications. It has to meet the standards of our caste.

I told him already, but he didn’t listen to me; he has no respect for my authority. Damn! If I had done the tenth of what he’s allowed to my father. I would be dead by now. Can’t he see I’m doing all this for him?

He needs me. You can’t trust people out there to read your work and give you honest feedback. They’re all manipulative individuals with hidden agendas. They tell you it’s good only to make you feel good and more likely to love them. They don’t believe a word of it. They’re all JEALOUS and scared! They give you twisted feedback to let you marinate in your mistakes while they develop their craft and steal the literary prizes from you. I’ve been there. I know it.

My dearest son, he needs my help.

I’m going to write him a feedback letter for his birthday. Harsh and true. I won’t hold back my critics; he can take it. He has my blood in his veins.

It’s the best way to show him my support.

Thanks to Zane, for the birthday prompt. And thanks to Monika for the discussion that inspired this piece. Check out her weird and funny comedy sketches.

As for the prompt, I particularly enjoyed Paul’s answer:
