Feed Me Feedback on My Earnings
And how to get your own earnings booster
Releasing Medium Earnings Info went without a hitch. A few dozen Medium-users have installed it. And most didn’t uninstall right away. I call that a success!
And I got some wonderful feedback about it. More about that in a later update. For now, it’s time to share some progress on the extension. This time, it’s all about filters.
And I need your feedback to provide the best experience I can offer.

No filter. No limits. No fun.
The first release provided you with all your stories and all the earnings on each day. And some rudimentary filtering. It didn’t allow for a lot of digging. Not a lot of fun.
Missed the release? It’s right here:
For this release, I laid the foundation to do some more advanced filtering is there. I decided to include two ways of filtering to start out with.
Why only two? I want to prevent the headache that comes with styling a bunch of additional stuff on the screen. And I want early feedback to make sure I’m still on the right track.
Remember to comment on everything you think is worth commenting on. I appreciate all your input and will consider every single thing for an upcoming release. No need to limit yourself to only one comment, by the way.
A Date with Someone Picky
Wouldn’t it be nice to filter by date? Or actually a range of dates? Now you can!

I ran into a bit of a challenge implementing this. The table actually has two types of data:
- the story itself
- the earnings and views per day (i’ll shorthand to earnings from now on)
If you would filter by date, what do you want to see?
- 1) All stories published within the data range and earnings within the range?
- 2) All stories published within the data range and all its earnings?
- 3) All earnings within the data range, even if the story was published outside of it?
I decided to go with number 3. If you filter by date-range, you don’t get any earnings outside of the range. Check out the picture: although it was published before the date-range, it is shown in the table: there was a 1 view in that frame of time.

Note that I currently show the total earnings of a story, not the sum of the filtered dates.
Feedback time: what would you want to see when you filter by date? Is it 1, 2 or 3? Or do you have something else entirely different in mind? Let me know. Don’t filter your comments. Just let it out.
I am starting to get a bit bothered by the date-format I use: year-month-day. I use that to be totally clear. But… Is it very clear?
There are numerous ways to display a date, let’s name a few:
- universal (big to small): year-month-day
- logical to human beings (small to big): day-month-year
- silly: month-day-year
Sadly, there is a huge chunk of people on this planet that prefer the silly date-format. I don’t want to, but I just may support it in the future.
If you want the format of dates I use in my extensions to change, you know where that silly comment button is!
To Earn or Not to Earn. That’s the Filter.
By now you have probably seen in the screenshot, that there are little boxes that say ‘Min Earnings’ and ‘Max Earnings’. Hopefully, these two boxes do what you expect them to.
Let’s suppose I want to filter out my big earners? It’s easy! Just put a huge number in the first box and the results are immediately shown in the table.
Or, if you’re like me, you’ll want a screenshot with all the results of low-earners in action. I first entered a maximum of $0,10. Ouch. There were a lot of stories to scroll through.
I finally went with a maximum of $0.03 to be able to fit them in a screenshot:

I ran into the same challenge again here. What to filter? In the end I settled with something that I find very intuitive myself. Some say that Self-confidence is the best filter. I should probably leave this as is. Or not. I am not sure.
Great filter, self-confidence.
Anyway, I love feedback. Tell me what you think. For example: if you enter a minimum of $10, would you want to see days where you have grossed less than $10 if the story has made over that amount? Or should I filter that day’s earnings out of the table??
I rather not resort to adding filters for earnings-per-day and stories. It would make a right mess on the screen. But maybe… Maybe I can’t avoid it.
So… Maybe we should talk about the goal here:
- a) do you want to filter by earnings?
- b) if so, what are you interested in?
Celine Lai made a great comment on how she used the extension. I want to make what she’s doing easier. I’ll update your later on what she said. For now, let’s hear your thoughts!
Upcoming releases
In the next release, I’ll add more filters: views and read-times. First, I want to figure out how to filter. In case you hadn’t realized: that’s where you get to participate in the comments ;)
The next version will most likely include:
- filter by views
- filter by reading time
- quick filters
Yep, quick filters? I want to introduce a couple of quick-filters. Like ‘show me all stories from the last month’, or ‘show me this year’, or ‘show me stories that have very little earnings, but a lot of views’.
What would you want to include in those quick filters? And… How would you implement it? For example: how does one define little earnings, but a lot of views? To me, it’s probably a low view:earnings ratio. I’m curious to your suggestions.
Batman-Beta is available
The beta has been uploaded to the chrome webstore. Our elusive beta-testers get to taste this version a bit earlier to smoke out some bugs before I release this version into the wild (I hate to admit that I already spotted two bugs while taking screenshots; I squashed one of them already).
Want early access? Become a beta-tester! Have a look here.
Oh, wondering about Batman? I can’t replicate a bug I found while proudly showing the new release to my spouse. It had all dates show like NaN NaN NaN. Sound like a theme song to me.
Thanks for taking the time to read and thanks a lot for all your suggestions? If you have no suggestions, consider taking a second or two to comment anyway. It’s nice to know whether you think I am on the right track.
Or, suggestion if you don’t have anything to comment: tell me how many times ‘Na’ is sung in the 60s batman theme song? You know the answer is in your head somewhere!
See you in the next update!
