One story already made me $1.84 this week, far from the 10 cents it made in February.

Pay It Forward — By the way, all Medium links here are ‘friendly links’ meaning if you’re not a paying member you can still read the stories, even this story will have a free link at the end. It’s my way of paying it forward if you’re here testing the waters of becoming a Medium writer. Thank you.

Medium algorithm, you cheeky li’l devil

I noticed this before. Unless my stories from last month have become ‘viral’ they stopped getting views once the new month starts.

In April, I’m seeing fewer of my March stories on my MPP (Medium Partner Program) dashboard, except for some stories that I wrote towards the end of March.

Does it mean the algorithm skips a month, that is why my February stories are back?

I can’t tell for sure. But if you want to squeeze some new dollars from your old stories, here’s how to optimize them.

  1. Optimize the title. Tip: Especially for older articles, if you put a year, you can change it to the current year.
  2. Change the images. Remember to update the alt text description.
  3. Add a few new sentences.
  4. Tweet or share on social media.
  5. Respond to new comments.

In other words, make it fresh, even Google gives you browning points when you update your old articles, a tip from Neil Patel.

👇👇But never do this!

Edit a story that is going viral, not a word, not even a period. I had in the past, and it stopped gettin’ views.

It signals the Medium algorithm that you’re being cheeky.

By the way, in May rinse and repeat by optimizing your stories from March.
