Favourite Fiction Finds May 2020

Some of my favourite longer fiction discovered on Medium

It’s taken me a while to dig into Medium to find the sorts of fiction that I like to read. Stories that are a complete tale, that have a beginning, a middle and a satisfying conclusion.

Stories with a compelling character or a well-captured voice or a richly imagined world.

Twists that I didn’t see coming or if I suspected, I wanted to stay to see how the writer achieved them.

Writers who weave words that paint pictures. Stories that keep me with them to the end.

Stories that stay with me long after I’ve read them.

I’ve read more stories than I can count over the past couple of months so haven’t been able to acknowledge every single one I’ve loved. In no particular order, here are eleven of my favourites. I hope you’ll take a look and enjoy them too.

This one was an accidental find from the homepage. David Somerville has captured an incredible voice with his first-person character in this piece. His descriptions are powerful and his little turns of phrase make this a masterful piece of prose.

Kevin Heads horror tale had me eyeing my bookshelves warily for sometime after I read it.

I only just discovered Danse Macabre by The Somnambulist Society and the title, one of my favourite pieces of music, roped me in straight away. The story more than lived up to expectation.

Janie Emaus surprised me with a beautiful Sci-Fi story exploring the human heart and the writer’s mind.

T. Mark Mangum is offering a collaborative writing experience where you, dear reader, get a chance to contribute to the direction of the story. Well worth taking a look at Growler Ink and it’ll be a lot of fun seeing how he develops this, so the more the merrier.

This story of the caste system in India by preeti has haunted me ever since I read it back in April. It’s well worth savouring.

Joey Lim has created this fantasy tale with a twist, which I loved because Joey ended it at just the right point where I got to enjoy thinking about what happens next.

Another fantasy tale, this time from Mark Starlin created from a The Friday Fix prompt. For part of his inspiration, Mark used a book from one of my favourite fantasy series. His post will explain the prompt better than me.

Sarah Lofgren has taken the classic hitchhiker tale and made it her own with some delicious musical overtones.

And Machel Maxwell has done something different with the wendigo, as well as introducing me to a different myth.

And a special mention for this piece by Francine Fallara because I’m in love with the Sci-Fi world she’s building and seriously hope she writes more stories in it.

I hope you’ll check out some of these writers and their fiction and if you enjoy them please let them know.
