What is Active Publications?

The Problem — There are over 15,000 publications on Medium. Based on my research, the vast majority of these publications are dead. Some of these publications left Medium as their hosting platform during one of the many pivots Medium has made. Others were created by writers who for one reason or another simply stopped maintaining the publications. While many of these “dead publications” contain useful posts, they make it much harder for writers to find active publications.

What is an active publication? There is no one definition, but for our purposes, an active publication is one that has produced at least one new post in the past month and is accepting of new writers.

Taking this a step further, we created Active Publications to help filter out publications that contain new articles, but are not looking for new writer article submissions.

One of the criteria we use to determine if a publication is truly open to new writers, is we look at whether a publication contains posts from at least three unique authors.

How is Active Publications Useful?

Most writers on Medium are familiar with the unnecessarily time consuming process of finding a publication that will accept their submissions.

Active Publications is useful because we search for and aggregate publications that are actively seeking writers and have a track record of publishing content from multiple writers (besides the publication’s owner).

This allows writers the freedom to spend more time writing, and less time searching for and pitching publications that will only waste their time.
