Me at the Beach!

The Day I Wore a Bikini

Part 2: Mom I love Your Big Belly

I bought a bikini at the end of December, after my daughter told me she loved my big Belly, in preparation for our family trip to New Zealand. In between buying it and wearing it I had moments of empowerment thinking

ya I am gonna do this

followed by moments of anxiety thinking

how am I going to do this.

On the day we arrived in New Zealand my sister-in-law picked us up from the airport at 5 am. We decided to try and do as much outside as possible to help keep us awake after the long journey and to help with ensuing jet lag. She suggested we go to the beach. My daughter jumped for joy and I took a deep breath.

We stopped by her house to change into beach wear. I thought to myself this is it. You have to do it. So I put my bikini on under my clothes and chose not to think about it while we went out for breakfast before heading to the beach.

After breakfast and picking up some beach toys we drove 30 mins to the beach. I was too focused on staying awake in the car to worry about what was going to happen at the beach.

One of the many awesome beaches in Auckland

The weather was beautiful when we arrived. It was a Saturday so there were kids getting surfing and lifeguarding lessons. I worried this might intimidate me. What would all these ultra fit teenagers think! We got to our spot. I got my daughter sorted with sunscreen and she was off building a sandcastle. It was my turn.

I took off my shirt and shorts and waited for the stares I was sure were coming. Not one person looked at me. No one cared!!!!

I felt a sense of freedom. My belly had a nice fresh summer breeze on it and it felt delightful.

I put sunscreen on then went for a swim with my little girl. I asked her what she thought of my new bathing suit. She said it was awesome and kept swimming. This was not a big deal to her! Just Mommy in a new suit that happens to be a bikini.

Next up was building the sandcastle. The moment I sat down I felt panic rise up. The rolls. People would see my belly rolls! My sister in law could see my distress, she looked at me directly and said:

Everyone has rolls when they sit. Don’t worry about it. You look great!

I took a deep breath and started building the sand castle. After a few minutes I forgot all about it!

The awesome sand castle we built! Don’t you love the garden of seaweed all around it?!

We had a fantastic time building the castle. The most important thing was my daughter saw me out there enjoying the day in a Bikini. It was a big deal for me but not for her. She will simply have memories of me in a Bikini and know that that is OK for her too.

My next bold move?! If my body was good enough for the beach, then surely it is good enough for the internet…

Me: Wearing a bikini for the first time in 9 years!
