Exuberant Laughter Makes One Feel Good

DEP prompt 51 of 52: “Are you your name?”

My mother gave me the name of Joyce Irene. I weighed five pounds. She was confined to bedrest for the latter part of her pregnancy. I don’t know why. There was a sister that was stillborn before me. My mother had no problems with future pregnancies. I can only surmise that my parents rejoiced over my healthy birth.

Joyce means joyous or rejoice. Irene stands for peace.

My childhood wasn’t spent under ideal loving conditions. I feared my mother’s mood swings. I learned there would be no cuddles from either parent. I received loving energy from my dog and cats. The forest of my mountain home nurtured me.

True to my name I was a curious child, full of energy, exploring the mysteries of nature. I couldn’t resist climbing trees or rock cliffs. My innate spirit danced with the delightful wonders that abounded in my woods. I was free to roam and learn about all facets of my world. I became an amateur naturalist.

My mother craved quiet and peaceful surroundings. My vivacious energy grated on her nerves. I learned to tiptoe in her presence and be quiet as a mouse. Teachers at school preferred rigid obedient behavior also. Adults in authority tried to quell my exuberant nature. My body wanted to move. I felt restrained to sit still. But I also had a thirst for knowledge.

I could laugh and play with abandon when I was outdoors. I enjoyed playing soccer and softball. I knew I would be miserable at a desk job. I gravitated to studying medicine. I saw the spark in my mother’s eyes while telling stories about nursing. There was adventure and skill to working in a hospital. It was a good fit for me.

I love to laugh. It is the essence of joy. It expresses my name to the fullest. It is a high vibration. It dispels sadness and is good for your mental health. It has even cured some diseases. Whenever our family questions whether life is worth living, laughter has kept us sane. It is the best medicine in the world. It is better than any mind-altering drug.

I would say that I have definitely been true to my name. Every job and pursuit I’ve gone after has brought me joy and fulfillment. Yes, there have been moments of despair, but laughter has enabled me to stay strong.

Many jobs involve a certain element of danger. First responders, firefighters, police, and medical personnel thrive in it. Mountaineers, rock climbers, cavers, extreme kayakers, and surfers love the thrill. You live fully in the present moment with acute awareness. That is pure joy!

A person involved in artistic and creative pursuits feels the same elation. The intense focus of painters, dancers, orchestral players, and popular singers access another dimension. Pure creativity is a joyous feeling. You are truly alive.

Those of us who work in intense adrenaline-producing jobs engage in black humor. We are not being disrespectful, we’re releasing tension and steam. So we can continue to do our jobs and maintain our sanity.

I am grateful that my mother christened me Joyce Irene. I’ve spent eighty-plus years seeking joy and peace wherever I am.
